Thanks.  Just been doing this stuff for more than 30 years.  This site belongs to the12volt.  You can read alittle about us by clicking on our Profile links.

To learn, read everything you can on this site starting with the links on the left column, and on www.bcae1.com for starters.

Thank you from me as well. Like David, while I do not have the time served that David has, my 20+ years are direct car audio from sales to install, from a basic butt connector to a full blown fibreglass job. Where you will learn is here on this forum by asking questions and sharing the things that you learn with others. Had I known about this forum and any forum years earlier, the tasks I can do now, I would have been able to tackle far easier back then. Good trusting info, look no further than this site as well. Most of us belong to other forums as well, however it is the sheer knowledge base available here on this forum that keeps us all in tune. This forum is by far and away one of the best tools a person can have. Hats off to the moderators, site owners and the members that make it worth staying.

I just want to second that.  I have been involved in forums for many years now, and this has to be my favorite forum.  The maturity level here, along with the incredible knowledge that people like Dyohn have make it so.  The icing on the cake definitely is the huge resource of information held within this site.  This is truely the best place for any installer and DIY'er to hang out to better themselves.

The12volt ( yes, that's his real name ;) founded this site with the idea that he would provide the site with a great base of technical information, and the fun and fluff will naturally just come with it.  The idea works well because we all have a lot of fun on this forum and learn at the same time.  A lot of other sites have the concept of designing for fun and fluff and think that the technical aspects will arrive in time.  That idea doesn't work.  You might as well be asking around at the basketball game for as much knowledge as you usually end up with.

You will learn a lot in time as we all have.  A lot of us do research by checking through our thumbnailed links when we answer a post.  By re-reading the information we strengthen our own knowledge, then we provide those links in answers so you can get a clearer view of the big picture.  Examples of this are in DYohn's answer above and in Steven Kephart's answer in your too many eq's thread.  Anyone using this forum who goes the extra steps of going to those links and reading them, then saving them in their own files, will learn faster and benefit much greater than those who only read the poster's answer.

Repeating what you learned in your own words to someone else will greatly clarify the concept in question.  That is the great benefit of a forum approach to learning something, and a well designed / executed site such as this gives you all the tools to learn anything you want to know about in the car audio and related fields.   There isn't a day goes by that I don't learn something new by using this forum.

I actually started my electronics interests before I could weild a soldering iron. I used to burn myself terribly by misconnecting packages of AA batteries, with bread "twistie-ties". It was the only wire I could lay my hands on, but I learned VERY early on the differences and benefits to series an parallel. I burned out MANY flaslight bulbs in those days! Mind you, this was even BEFORE LEDs! Yes, I'm THAT old... LOL

No, I'm just a member here. I have been a member on several other forums through the last 5 to 10 years, and I always seem to just let the other memberships fade. The respect shown from member to member here is rare and refreshing. I keep coming back, because I have continued to learn valuable skills and information. Generally, the maturity shown here by the members of this forum I have never found at any other forum.

No, I am a full time (and then some) network administrator. This is simply a hobby for me. Most of the real knowlwdge I posess, I learned from working on my home stereo. That is my real passion (as opposed to my real hobby). Once you know how a speaker works, and how an amp works, and understand Ohm's Law, the jump from 120 to 12 volt is not a difficult one to make. I have worked in the 12 volt industry before though... I was an installer for about 5 years, then I got "old and fat"... and there wasn't enough money in it for me anymore. I got greedy, I guess.

Audio in general, since high school, 20 years ago this year!
jayson358 wrote:

My definition of affordable and your definition are going to be VERY different, so I will reserve comment here posted_image

Awww, shucks... But seriously, thank you. Everybody has it, you just need to find it, nurture it, and apply it. You too, could "be as smart as we are"; you already are, we have just honed our knowledges to fine edges. You have the tools already! You are interested, you are obviously willing, (and not to blow my own horn, I am including the other addressees of this thread,) you recognize expertise, which is VERY important in any knowledge quest.

and where can i learn it

Right here is a good place to start. I recommend also a LOT of reading. The loudspeaker Design Cookbook, by Vance Dickason is a fabulous resource. BCAE1.com is another. Pick up an "Ugly's" pocket reference book at you local hardware or electrical store, or a "Pocket Reference". I had both of those years ago, and I read them like novels.

I don't really have anything specific, with the exception of BCAE1.com - an excellent site. I am an internet junkie, and I have literally THOUSANDS of web-page links, none really to specific "how does" or 'how can" sites. Another of my favorites is www.howstuffworks.com VERY good site for answering questions. I liked this one better when it was newer and smaller, it it full of advertising and crap now, but still a good site once you have been there a few times and understand the basic navigation of it.

I have been doing this for 30 plus years and I cannot tell you how many times this site has saved me time and money. The guys you named are studs in this field but there are many more here with tons of knowledge. Sedate, Auex, Ravendarat, Steven Kephart, Dwarren, Kgerry, The Pencil, Ween just to name a few. Like the others said, be a sponge on this sight, soak in the smarts.

I actually started out as a roadie working rock shows in the late '60's and early '70's.  I got bitten by the sound engineering bug while hauling around large sound-reinforcement gear and wondering how to design those things.  I also realized that if I knew how to operate the gear or how to design the systems I wouldn't have to be the one breaking my back carrying around 100lbs loudspeakers!  posted_image

yes, this site is wonderful one of the best, the best imo, it have an excellent Admin, Moderators, Platinum Members, Gold Members, Silver Members, Standard Members and Rookie Members. i've learned a lot from these members in the last couple of month that i'm member and keep learning. the how fast you where answer when asking something, the excellent way they explain something to you(especially stevdart). and how patient they are when we ask stupid things, and how friendly they are, make this site who it is today, the best. Thanks Admin for making a such great site and thanks to all the members who made it the best and helping us save time and money. thanks a lot.
