Ok Heres the deal. I want to wire a tweeter to both the Left And Right fronts. But I dont want them to instantaniously become mono which is what would happen if I just did that. So i tried using diodes on each side. A diode with current going towards the tweeter on the left and dido on the right. Meaning current could not backflow through the wires and hit the opposing front speaker. Well I felt like crap because the tweeter had no sound. (The tweeter does work I tested it on one channel, no problems)

SO after all that explaining (which I dont think made much sense) How can I Get this tweeter wired up. I need it to basically be a Center Speaker. When balanced left, it and the left front is on and the right front is not. When balanced right, it and the right front are on and left front is not. When faded back its off. How in the world can this be achieved without getting it a seperate amp?

Ive racked my brain. Please help me out. Thanks

In short, you cant, at least not to my knowledge. One speaker means one channel. There are some speakers made that claim to be a stereo speaker but they are really just  a cone with 2 tweeters on it with a input from each one. I wish I could be more help but I just dont know and I dont think its possible.

Well I was wanting to do this because I got a nice tweeter for a great price the other day. Trouble was he only had 1. So I was gonna try to wire it up. I guess I'll have to try and find another one and just go actual stereo. I'm trying to not use much money because I want to buy a new woofer. The pair I have now still does the job but they've seen better days. I guess I dont have much of a choice though. Well I suppose it was worth a try. Thanks anyway. If someone does still see this and comes up with something let me know.

Thanks

You could try a transformer type of coupling... It will be mono, but, it will also contain both right and left information, and the balance should continue to work, with information coming out wherever the balance is.

Try to get AIR CORE TRANSFORMERS! Iron core will soak up ALL your highs, even though air-core will still soak up a good portion of them.

I can't promise this'll work, but it's as close as you'll be able to get, I think...

It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."

I bet Haemphyst is just Steven Hawking in disguise...without the digitized voice...and wheelchair...and, nevermind, not sure where that one was going. posted_image

Always amazed at the amount of information that the people on the12volt provide. It's great to be here!b

What about a small tri-way capable amp. That way you can run both speakers in stereo and the tweeter in the center.

Well your never going to believe this. I simply hooked it up to both the front and right. Figuring it would make my front channels go mono. (When balanced left all fronts on and dido for right.) It didnt. Balance still works and the tweeter is on at all times!

I cant understand it. I mean, HOW? I can here a little bit in the left if balanced right but not enough to notice from a normal listening position. Its so wierd. But it sounds good. The highs are crisp and clear now. The 6X9's (even though 5 way) just didnt really make it the way I liked it. I may still try a transformer and later probably will get a 4 channel amp thats bridgable into 2 & 3 channel modes. I wouldnt mind having one and then get a 2 channel for the rear speakers.

Anyways for now I'm fixed. I just never tried this because I just knew it would make the fronts go mono and I didnt want that. Things like this fascinate me sometimes. You just know it will do something but NO. Why should it let me be right. If it worked that way all the time life would just be too easy.

Thanks for the info. I'll keep the transformer in mind for other projects.

Actually, it used to be a fairly common technique in the pre-surround sound days to add a third speaker to a home stereo amp, connected between the left and right + speaker terminals.  This "center" speaker would then reproduce the difference between the two sides of the stereo signal and "fill the hole" in the center of the soundstage.  It is NOT the same as having a genuine center channel, and it places a lowered impedance on the amp, but as long as the amp can handle the load it's OK to do.  I highly recommend you add a high-pass crossover to that tweeter to protect it or it will burn our quickly.  If you do want a genuine center channel, there are processors available that will generate a discrete signal for you.
