Hi, last week me and my friend put one of my 4-5" JL speakers in his door. (198*-1990 dodge ram). I took out the factory speaker in the front right and replaced it with the JL. (there are front 4" in the doors, and 2 rear 6 by 9) We ran the speakers for a while and it worked fine. Now however (few days later) his speakers dont work anymore, none of them. I dont really know much, but from what ive read up, im thinking maybe on of the connections i made to the speaker came off and shorted out. I had cut the wire running to teh stock speaker and put it onto the JL (doodiety job, no electrical tape covering it). Any advice? What im thinking of doing is taking the speaker out, seeing if it works. Then i will check the front right speaker wire for continuity if they work when its out. 1 more thing. He said that one of the lights in his interior doesnt work anymore... to me this seems like it might just be a fuse in his fusebox that couldnt handle these beefier speakers (in comparison to stock), or i realllly realllly screwed something other than just his deck up. Please help me. I am a newb, im sorry. I always learn the hard way (as most people do), it suks. O and please no comments on how im an idiot etc. you can only add that if u have something beneficial to say aswell.

possibility on the shorting out on the no sound issue. as far as the interior light. not a speaker issue. probably something else you did during the install. my opinion would be to go to a reputable shop in the area and have them do the job for you. good luck.

if i shorted something though.... i would have just shorted the speaker wire that runs directly from the headunit to the speaker, or the amp in the headunit right? But because the interior light and the actual headunit will not get power, i think it might just be a fuse in the car? Is it possible that now with more pwoerfull speaker in the car it uses more power than the original fuse could handle, which would lead to it blowing the fuse and stopping the interior light/deck from working?

burtonripply, don't take this the wrong way but based on what you've posted you really do not know what you are doing.  Get some help.  I agree it sounds like you have shorted out your head unit and it is shut down in protection mode.  Go to a car stereo shop, pay for a proper installation.
