Ok here is what I have. I have 1 type X 10in. sub. It is the 4 ohm DVC style. I also have 2 Rockford Fosgate 1200W 2 channel "punch" series amplifiers (the ones that are about 3 years old). I build the ported box to alpines specs on their site.

My problems are as follows: After running the sub for a little bit it starts to smell a little funny, not like a burnt speaker but similar to glue or resin. I reenforced the box with fiberglass resin but it is dry and has been cured for over a month. The other problem is after a while one of my amps gets hot and then the thermo protect kicks it off.

I have the amps where they can get enough air too. I have plenty of power getting to them too. I have 2 alternators, 2 optoma redtops and 1, 1 farad cap right before each amp. I am constantly at 14.75 volts.

any suggestions?

You bridged each amp to one voice coil?  To *one* 10-inch woofer?  Huh.

I mean, this isn't really an answer but my box still smells a little like resin and I built it like 3 years ago.

Anyway, I'm just wondering here, this doesn't really have anything to do with your problem obviously, but, how do you have your red tops wired together?

How are your gains set???

What model amps do you have??? My guess is that they are the 400.2s

Rockford always lists the PEAK power for their punch amps.

Like 300 watts rms but "1200 WATT AMP!!!!"

... my box makes my truck smell like fiberglass almost everytime i bump it, especially on nice days with the window open-  aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!

built it well over year ago.  let it dry with a fan on it for a week before i put it in, too-lol!

i know it's possible to wire up two amps to a dvc sub, but how picky will the sub/ amps be in relation to how evenly the gain is set on each amp.  i haven't had too much experience here, but my mind is telling me that if the amps aren't putting out the exact same wattage, then you might run into problems?     anyone with a definite answer on that?

I wouldn't do it, you have a 1 in a million chance of your amps having the same gain factor, and throw in the phase inversions throughout both amps by the time they output im willing to bet the signals will be out of phase by a few degrees which will definitely heat up that sub. Use one amp.

The thing is , is the sub is staying cool. My amps are the 401s's. I am thinking of getting a diffrent amp though, any reccomendations for a 3000W amp?

Look for a amp that puts out around 1000 watts RMS at around 13 volts.
Alpine, JL, theres lots, too many to name. Ideally you should be paying around $.50 for every watt RMS.

Alpine Guy, are you figuring at a 2 ohm impedance with that 50 cents / watt ideal?

Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

Yeah pretty much. Im just trying to stray him away from those awesome deals "1000 watt amp, $75!!"

Basically a good 1000 watt rms amp will cost at least around $500 plus.

That smell you have is the glue that holds the voice coil is getting very hot.  This happened yesterday after crushing the 10" x -series alpine with a JL 1000/1 amplifier.

How could they be getting hot if I am not even pushing them anywhere near their max?

clipping possibly...hell I could fry one of your subs with a 150 watt max amp

You did say you had a *pair* of amps running to a single 10.

Probably not.

If the speaker cannot dissipate the heat being generated in the voicecoils by whatever the input signal is, be it clean or clipped, it is going to heat up and melt something. The longer something is played, the more heat it is going to generate. A one amp class D appoach is what you need here instead of the two rather small amps you have now.

What about inveerting the sub for now to help dissapate the heat? There is almost no diffrence in airspace according to Alpines site. I dont smell it as bad as of yesterday, sub still sounds awesome and there is no heat whatsoever comming out of the port.

Anyone?

Truthfully, I would just use 1 amp for now and break in that surround while you save up for the proper amp for the sub.

I ran it in a SPL comp
It hit a 139.7DB
I know I can get more out of a diffrent box but is that pretty decent for this sub?
