no sound from speakers, how to test?

OK so i have my speakers installed and i am getting no sound i have new wiring for everything, so my question is how would i test my speakers since they are almost 3 years old, and how much space around the bottom magnet do you need from metal (if any?) would i need for them to properly work. thanks for any help.

Um. Hmm.

If the speaker magnet is touching the sheet metal of the car the speaker will be grounded. Actually... I'm not sure what this would do... but quality sound production isn't a possible outcome.. posted_image

Grounding the basket or magnet of a speaker will have absolutely no effect on sound quality.

so this would mean that the speakers aren't working properly or at all...well they are getting old...good reason to get new ones posted_image

Please provide us with a little more information. Are your speakers connected to an amplifier or just your head unit? Were they working prior to rewiring everything? What kind of speakers are these? The easiest way to test your speakers is to connect them to a known good source, but if you suspect they may be bad, first measure DC resistance across the voice coil. You should get a reading very close to it's nominal impedance. Post back and let us know.

test your speakers with a DMM at the speaker. It should read something around 2 or 4. If it reads overload, or 0, they are blown. Do the same thing at the other end of your speaker wires. If the speakers had a reading, but there is none at the other end of the wires, your wires are bad or grounded. If you don't have a DMM, you can pop them with a 9v battery. If all is good, it is probably a problem with your source.

As said above test them with a kown good source is the easiest. I always take a qeustionable speak in and unplug my home speaks to test them, it only takes a sec and wil defintitely tell you good or bad.
