amp failure, death

Well, here is my current setup:

2 Swiss Audio DVC (2 x 4O) 500 Watt RMS subs
1 Pyramid P1000 (essentially 70 watts RMS (2 ohms) x 2)
8 Gauge power wire

OK, here is my problem. I was originall running my subs with an Ultra Linear UL2600D, which was rated at 450 w RMS (2 ohms) x 2. About 2 months ago, it died. It smoked up. I figured something was faulty with the amp (Ultra Linear? Faulty? Surprising thought for you guys, i know).


Well, I bought my pyramid amp from a friend so that i could still bang until I could get my other amp replaced. It has functioned perfectly for about a month or so (my friend had it running perfectly for a few months as well). It hasn't even blown a fuse or gone into protection. Well, today, i realized that something smelled like it was burning in my car. I looked down at my bass remote, and the LED was flickering. I immediatly switched it off and tested it again 5 minutes later. It did the same on the low bass notes.

Well, at first i thought that my battery had somehow drained, causing volt droppage. I hooked my battery to a battery charger, and in a matter of 2 minutes, the amp charge draw went from 4 amps to almost 2. So, that shouldn't be it.

All of my wiring should be straight. If it helps, my alternator is rated at 120A, but it seems to be working fine.

So, i guess these are my questions:

Could i really be drawing that much power with my (10 amp fused) CD player and 15 A max Pyramid Amp?

Could this problem be related to the death of my other amp, or just 2 faulty amps?

Maybe the low notes are drawing too much too fast from my battery...buy a cap?

I would greatly appreciate any help that I can get.

oh my god, i just thought of something. It was pretty hot today when i got in my car...that would do it, wouldn't it?

I remember my amp was hot to touch when i first looked at it...

Always let your equipment cool off before even turning it on. I've had amps and powered EQ's (recently) go out b/c of this. Invest in a quality amp, being aware of gain and impedances allthewhile, and you'll be set -at least until you want more power! Have Fun!

Yes your pyramid amps arent good quality at all. Actually Pyramid anything isnt good. I had a pyramid amp (1500 4 channel and it did basically nothing). I also once had 2 12" Pyramid subs rated at 1000watts a piece and were junk. Also had a 15" Pyramid sub and it blew in no time. Fact is that they dont put out what they say they do. Plus if you run them in 2 ohm, they will blow. Chances are that the amp couldnt handle the load or you had the level on it up too high and it got too hot.
