For those that don't know, I've been working on this for the last 3-4 months. I finally installed it yesterday. It's not finished yet, but it is working. I still have to add GPS, XM radio, backup cam, and possibly on board diagnostics.

Right now it consists of:
Insight mini ITX P4 mobo
Celeron 4 2.0ghz
120 MB harddrive
256 MB RAM
Foxconn low profile pci WiFi card
Lilliput 7" touchscreen
Keypower DC-DC PSU
Car PC EZ v2.4 Power Controller
some other stuff I forgot

I managed to cram the computer into the factory CD changer case. Well, most of it anyway. The powersupply is mounted below it along with a huge mess of wiring the can really be done away with as I can't shorten a VGA or USB cable very easily. Most of the rest are leftover wires from the PSU that I may need so I opted to just leave them and I'm gonna make a panel to cover that whole area. Ok I guess it's time for pics.

I've been watching that 'jeeputer' meter forever! posted_image

No idea why you need that, but that looks freakin wicked.

Nice work man.

Truly, that's quite cool.

Glare is bad enough that the windows will be tinted ASAP. After that I think it will ok. I tried hard to figure out how to recess it, but I just didn't have enough room.

dood... you need to get some more sunlight!

Seriously, though, that is sweet!

Nice work man. What the purpose though?? Especially with a 120MB HD. Did you mean 120GB??

So, where ya gonna hide all the wires? There may be room behind the panel in the fender area.

As far as the glare goes, it may be to late but if you decide to rebuild you could alway build out as opposed to recess.

Definately looks good!

Tint helped the glare alot! I'm gonna make a panel this weekend to cover that whole area under the CD changer housing to cover the wires and PSU.

Yes I did mean 120 GB. I wouldn't have gone that big if I hadn't just had it lying around. My main intentions were the harddrive (no changing cd's ever again) and GPS.

I demand more pics, more info, more specs, and more resources(sites). Ok well I don't demand I request. It is hard to sort through the stuff on mp3car.

Well, I don't know what else to take pics of. Other than my wifi antenna and relocated HU, there isn't much more right now.

As far as resources go, the only thing different from a regular computer is the power. This is my PSU and this is my power controler. The power controler made things easy, it turns on my amps, turns the computer on and off, monitors battery voltage (shuts down if voltage goes too low) it pretty much takes care of most of the hard stuff. The PSU takes 12v DC instead of the normal 120 AC and it just hooks up like an amp.

For software, I'm using Frodoplayer. You can find it on MP3car under the software section. It makes normal music control with the touchscreen very easy. It handles all types of media (even when the car is in motion posted_image ). It's completly skinable. It's really quite cool. I might get a picture of it in action.

I did some "wardriving" for the first time. You would seriously be amazed at how many wireless access points there are. I live just outside of Montgomery AL, on the verge of semi-urban and very rural. There are tons of hotspots.

I still haven't gotten a GPS reciever or software but I think I'm gonna go with iGuidance and a BU-303

I've decided that voice control is also nessisary. I'm gonna play with NaviVoice, a program made by a member of Mp3car.com. It seems to be the prefered method.

Is that enough? I'll try and get some more pics soon.

I jsut finnished my SonataPC and it kicks ass, but the glare is shhhty.

I got both of these, and it is a great combination. Just plan on mounting the GPS reciever outside of your car, I can't get any locks with it on my dash (maybe it's to close to any electrical stuff). I'll have some pics as soon as I find my digicam =\

I have to say, running My sound throught the sound card of the PC sounds a LOT better then my old HU. I just need to hook my amps up tot he delayed REM wire on my startup/shutdown controller so that i don't get that POP from them.

sorry for the huge ass pictures

as you can see the glare is prety bad durring the day. But i'm trying to make some kind of shield for it. Aslo you can see the wireless USB NIC in the bottom and the GPS reciever on top. But the GPS reciever is going to be moved to the top og the trunk lid as soon as I get some time (hopefully tomorrow or monday).

I just ordered iguidance and a BR-304. The BR-304 is just like the BU-303 except it's serial instead of usb. I still have a bit of glare and I'm gonna look around and see if there is any sort of film that we might use to help out a bit.

This looks a little too good to be true, in a cheap infomercial way. This looks like it may work, if it can be trimmed and won't interfere with the touchscreen. Anyone have any experiance with either?

Hey oonikfraleyoo

How are you going to have the system shut down everytime you turn off the vehicle?  If you just stopped the power to it, the OS wouldn't be too happy.  I was thinking about putting a carputer in my vehicle, but couldn't get around the whole idea of shutdown each time.

CarPC EZ 2.4 - It's a shutdown controler made for putting a computer in a car. There is a link in this thread.

Hey guys, it's been a long time since I have posted.

As some may know I have also been working on a carputer, except mine is a cut-puter (that doesn't sound as nice as Jeeputer, maybe I need a Jeep) since my car is a Cutty.  I could call it a Cuttyputer, but that sounds worse.

Anyway, I had someone recommend the brialliant idea of having a PC with tons of RAM and having the OS boot to RAM, so I don't have to worry about the hard drive, since a harddrive can be toast after even a small pothole, another person recommended using bootable USB flash memory, which is what I may do.  But the USB memory will probably require some hacks since windows loads the driver to even recognize the USB port is in use, I will figure that problem out later.

I am building mine on an extremely tight budget, like spending no money if I can help it, so I am building a voltage regulator and just bypassing the powersupply, since if you use an inverter plus a computer power supply, you could get the nasty ground loop noises; currently I am just building a personal version of Linux and trying to debug everything, plus getting some extra PCs for the parts I will most likely fry during the installation/test.

Then again, if I had $500 to spend I would just scrap everything and buy this especially since it's only about 2 inches tall, although I am not much of a fan of Macs.

I definetely do not want to forget to tell oonikfraleyoo that I have been waiting for ever since I saw the progress bar at 25%, I am glad you are almost finished, and it looks like this will turn out great.

Great job man!!!

I wouldn't worry about the harddrive at all. Harddrives can take a beating. There are people on MP3car.com that claim to have gone through some nasty wrecks and the computer never skipped a beat. I personally have been off road with mine, and it never had a problem at all. If you hit a bump that damages your harddrive, you have much bigger problems to deal with.

Well, no more just searching for blown fuses and shorted wires. Now I have the added pleasure of figuring out what drivers I need and why certain .xml files aren't being read. I think I'm gonna have to buy XP too. Oh well, troublshooting is part of the fun right, right?

So I gess there are no non-glare touch screen monitors? Are there any fixes rather than using an umbrella to block the sun?

Sorry, I've been out of the country for awhile. There are no "glare bust" VGA screens that I know of, but placement is really the biggest thing. Mine isn't that bad at all. I have tinted windows and I use a light colored skin during the day and have no problems reading whats on the screen. Again placement is the biggest concern. Most of the glare that I do get comes from the back windows. If I was able to move the screen down another 6" then I would have absolutly no glare. Every car is different and some may only have one option. You could also look into upgrading the backlight in the LCD.

oonikfraleyoo, I have a question for you. Do you have your audio setup running through the computer? Do you also have a head unit or are you using the computer as a head unit? If you are using the computer as the head unit how do you have the amplifiers hooked up? Either way could you take some pictures of how they are hooked up to your audio system? Thanks.
Sincerely,
       J

My system is a little different...I used a $10 1/8-inch-to-RCA wire (made by Belkin....claim to be IPod specific, yea ok) into a 3-way Xover then to amps.  turn the PC down a bit to reduce noise.

Please, take some pictures, I have been planning on putting a carputer into my Maxima, and it will be going into my system I am installing now, I have the computer here already, all I need is a new PS, and V. Card and Audio card. I like the idea of haveing 2 external hard drives that I can take and install audio on one and video on another,  and I can have a CD/DVD drive in my trunk in case there is a CD or DVD a friend wants to listen to or watch, that I don't have stored on the HD. I want to get rid of my headunit and have a 10 inch touchscreen mounted into my dash. But I am wondering how I should go about doing this, since I would have to shut down and turn on my OS everytime I restart the car. I would think I would have much more audio control over my subs and highs and lows in a computer than in a headunit. But I am not 100% if you can help me out, please let me know. What I am basically asking is how should I go about installing this, and what is the best cards I can get to use, so I have atleast FM, maybe even AM radio. And, as far as software, what are the recommendations! Please help! Thanks! Have a great halloween everyone!

By using a 12v dc-dc PSU you'll have an automatic start-up/shut-down controller, use an Opus, Carnetix, or M1. You can also get the pc to go into hybernate, instead of shutting down, this way it'll restart quicker. Shut down delay times are also adjustable.  FM/AM radio is not really workable on a carputer, reception is poor. But you can add XM.

How should you go about installing this? Ask me this in an email and I can reply.

When the PC goes into hybernate it still shuts of. It just "remembers" the last settings, so it won't use any power.
