I installed an HID on a Softail. It lasted about two weeks and went bad. Apparently the HIDs don't like voltage drops. It will shorten the life and the arc goes dim or completely out and wont re-strike until you restart (the bike in my case)
The voltage drop happens when you start the bike. Thanks to daytime headlights the headlights always on with the ignition and when you start the bike it creates such a load that the lights do dim.
This is what I need:
How do I wire the relay(s)...and..or..?
I have a push button switch, momentary non-latching.(would like this to be one of those small stainless flush LED types but they all seem to be latching)
I would need this button to turn the HID on/off and default to open/off when voltage is lost or ignition is turned off. This way I don't have to remember to turn the headlight off next time I start the bike. HOWEVER, how do I turn it off once its on? (without shutting down the bike)
I have an H4458 relay and figured out that by tying pins 86 and 30 together I can keep the relay coil energized when I push the momentary button, but when I push the button again I would like the lights to turn off. I want the ability to flash the lights while going down the road. I have enough room in the head light can for another relay+
Whats the solution? Thanks for the opportunity to ask.

If you want the HIDs to cut out during cranking, it should be easy enough to write its/their relay coil 85 to the starter solenoid. Hence the solenoid normally grounds the relay(s) except when it is +12V to crank the engine.
To have the HIDs when only the engine is running you could use the charge light (if fitted) or charge/not-charging circuit, else a voltage sensing or spark/injector sensing circuit.
Of course add a manual bypass in case you stall or turn off the engine and still require the HIDs. Or maybe a self-latching relay circuit could be used as below (with the "on" switch being the charge or pulse or voltage "switch" +12V) and noting that its supply (+12V) must be cut to turn it off - ie, +12V is IGN +12V and IGN is turned off before recranking after a stall or kill for the HIDs to be off.
