So many brands, so many opinions!

Thinking about what's available today, AND what was at one time available from each of the listed manufacturers, I am kinds curious to see what people opinions are...

What is your favorite brand, overall?

At one time they made some of the best head units in the industry.  You couldn't open a car audio mag and not find a competitors vehicle with a Sony ES head unit.  I myself still run Sony from that era in my car.  But then came the day of the Xplod.

Completely agree Steven. The ES stuff was top notch. I was assuming Hamfist was talking current gear. In which case Sony = wretch.

Please don't get me wrong, I don't mean to be political on this forum. I am extremely interested what the view of the USA is in Pakastan. If this question is out of line I apologize up front. It's just that our media in this country clouds and steers our opinions to match their political views.Glad to have you on board Extacy, sorry if my curiousity is out of line.

I certainly didn't cast my vote toward the current putz in office...must a been some other jerk.

O.K. to make this pole correct, their should be a "BEFORE" a certian year and "AFTER" a certian year.

Zappco needs to be in this also....and Soundstream .....

OK, yeah... Blaupunkt, Zapco, Soundstream... Yep, I agree they should be in there as well, but I can only include 12 choices! posted_image (And I can't edit the poll AFTER it's posted...)

I only included the ones that are batted about on a very regular basis here on the12volt!
I won't want to say anything further regarding the political state, 'cause I don't want to get banned for the inappropriate language that would spill forth! the12volt servers would probably crash trying to filter it all! posted_image

Seems the results of my hyper-scientific poll are a bit off mark! The following is from this thread.

Alpine Guy is right, though... Many opinions here are based on advertisers telling them what they should like. If you had asked the better of Alpine or Sony, I'd be willing to bet you'd hear more responses for the Sony garbage.

Wow, this is a completely useless poll if you are able to vote multiple times.  The two "top" companies right now don't have anything I've seen from them to put them on top.  For example, Rockford Fosgate's amplifiers and subs are only sub-par compared to several of the other companies offerings up there IMO.  I think we need a new poll.

Lots of companies have strong points, but lack in area's also. I voted for Kicker for the subs, pretty good SQ, and a lot of spl. Ive heard lots of bad things about power acoustik, which isn't even one of the choices, but I'm loving my silver edition amps. Seems like they give plenty of power. Kicker, Hifonics, MTX amps are on my list also. Head units I lean towards Pioneer, Alpine, clarion, Panasonic. I am running a Panasonic head unit right now that hasn't had any problems what so ever. Highs and mids, Memphis, Eclipse, and then Kicker is alright. Lots of different companies with good products.

what you mean? i only use it for sub... I got pioneer 2900mp, pioneer 3200t amp and ts w251r 10 inch subs. sound ok, but my problem is the inside speakers. I can not get them to sound clean, is like a ghost, no definition and clarity? is the problem that I have 2 way speakers? I might be considering something else since I want SQL not SPL.

I am quite amazed by the overall runaway status of the Alpine... Also commentable (and lamentable, for me, really) is the fairly dismal appearance made by Eclipse. Although 5th of 35 isn't terrible, (that's an 85-percenter) I just thought MAYBE a better following! It only beat Pioneer by one vote, which means we AREN'T doing our jobs! posted_imageposted_imageposted_image

Hmmm, several intriguing brands over there, though several I failed to see like DLS, Morel, Seas, Scan Speaks, Hertz, Audison, etc.

I personally cannot say I'm a fan of one single company because there are drawbacks to each to my own tastes. Some companies only produce speakers while others produce amps. Some that produce both make great speakers and amps, but one or the other doesn't appeal to my tastes. I'm surprised nobody voted for Aura.

Hey some of their head units have high voltage output for less cash, even higher than some of the big guys like pioneer and alpine! I found this out after doing a spec comparison for my sq car in Crutchfield. I always wondered why my stereo wasn't as loud when I replaced my Xplod with a Pioneer, lol! I cant believe Aiwa is in the list! Its a hard poll b/c a lot of these guys dont make head units so go figure. I voted A/D/S but I like Eclipse head units (even though customer service and repair times are crap!)

i have to say, as overall.... alpine has to be the best at this point. they offer the best value for much better than average equiptment. one thing i need to add though is my panasonic hu is the best i have ever heard and is also visually stimulating (which usually means it actaully sux... but anyways). I have 3 type r 12 inch subs run by two alpine amps which sound+ feel amazing. I must back up pioneer though, my premier set sounds amazing, but whatever.

I voted Alpine.  Amps are top notch, I love the smart power supply and stackable look of the pdx.  Also had 2 type r's for 3 years until they got stollen.   Anyway be careful with buying from that site, I believe they are not an authorized dealer therefore do not carry a manufacturers warranty, only one from s, and that's totally at their descression.

I feel this is a tough poll. Personally its hard to pick one overall best. I like Alpine head units as many do but I think their speakers lack, MB quart and Focal make some of the best speakers but dont make good head units if any, It seems that there should be some way to break it down. hard to vote on just one best.

I like MTX's amp's, let me clarify that only the Thunder Elite and Thunder series, but their speakers have never sounded that good to me.  I've sat in the Cobalt (an assload of of Thunder coaxials and 8 10" Thunder 8500's with 2 1004's and 2 or 4 1500's sorry can't remember) and it's wasn't very impressive at all.  My Civic would blow the doors off it on it's worst day with half the power, half the equipment , and no 240 volt power supply.  So, amps yes, speakers, no except for the 9500 subs...

I have two of the 9500s 12s in my grandprix with an mtx8100d on each one i also have mtx 6'5 components in my door and mtx 6'9s in my rear deck. I use to have all infinity in my car. Its just my opinion but i think the mtxs sound much beter than the infinitys did. Maybe the install on the cobalt wasnt done very well. Was that the only mtx system that you have heard? Im not tryn to say anything negative but a bad install can make top end stuff sound like jensen.

Hmmm....good point, I can't say I've heard many full MTX systems but if they sounded good enough for you to replace your Infiniti's that says alot.  But as far as the Cobalt what threw me off about it the most was that it was one of there demo cars.... I mean dont get me wrong the install and the car itself were beautiful but as for the sound it was lackluster to me.  The highs were pretty harsh and for 8 tens it didn't do it for me.  Honestly I have installed full MTX systems that sounded much better than that.  As far as being top notch I can give them the nod to that because theie good stuff is indestructable and will never die (unless you're an Ultra Idiot os something) egardless of how hard you push it.

I would vote Rainbow for my mid's and high. Focal is nice, too, but they don't have as many different series, thus options, as rainbow. I am saving up for some Rainbow's right now, just trying to decide which ones. I voted Eclipse, however. Even though I don't own anything besides a 88120dvc 12" aluminum sub, they have a very wide ranging and quality line of products. If was going to do a DVD system in my far I would undoubtably do eclipse and their mids and highs are good to very good. Their amps I'm not too familiar with, but I know they put out some pretty strong amps back in the day.

My favorite brand is ARC Audio!  It used to be JL Audio, but now I am 100% ARC Audio fan.  I just got a system installed by an Indianapolis shop called SoundSational Audio & Video.  They installed a complete ARC Audio system using the ARC12D4 subwoofers, ARC 300.2 amplifier on subs and a KS300.4 on my interior speakers.  This is by far the best sounding system I have had to date!! Whats amazing, is that I didn't buy the more expensive line of ARC that Soundsational sold.  If this stuff sounds this good, I can't imagine what the signature series of amps would sound like.

I personally think it all depends on the application. One could find that an Alpine hu would fit better in their certain application as opposed to someone else's different needs.

My personal preferences (since that is what this is about) are:
Pioneer in-dash navi-will hopefully be getting my F series soon!!
a/d/s/ - old school amp that still puts out better than amps I've heard today
MB quart speakers (the original ones before they got bought by the government) - nothing like them. they are truly the best for sound quality, reliability, and sheer loudness!! Not to mention THD...
I prefer Kicker wiring. Tends to be very conductive and I like the fact that it's "routable" and flexible.

It's sad to see Zapco hasn't been recognized more. Since the dawn of Car audio they have been a front runner. Quality is excellent, design is top notch and tweek sound quality. The company hasn't been bought out or traded like all the others. The stuff is still made in the US. Support is in the top 3. I don't by gear from ebay, however the Zapco stuff is solid enough, it would be a safe purchase. The purchase price is high, in ten years, I bet the gear still meets spec!

better yet haemphyst or DYohn should set up 2 more polls. 1 for the SQ guys and one for the SPL guys.

Obviously there are Kicker fans (all SPL **cough**)

Then alpine me - which i believe would have to fall under SQ. I am sure i will get hate mail after saying that but...  what ever...

JL - SPL

Memphis- SPL

Then we could see who comes in 1st.... probably alpine again but it gives something new.

This was tough.  So I bet on amplifiers.  Zapco just plain rocks the amp world.  If I had to choose head units, it would be a cross between JVC,  Eclipse,  and Alpine.  Speakers, mids and tweets,  Focal, Crystal, Lanzar, or even MB Quart.  Subwoofers. There are so many good ones out there it drives you crazy.  But around $300 you can get JBL w12GTiMkII which totally rocks or the JVC Arsenal CS-AW8240 or a Cerwin Vega Stroker.   All three are heart stoppers and sound great in my book. MA Audio is pretty good too.

Newbie here ... I wanted to post this question on the "Choosing an Amp" thread but it's closed. The question is about choosing the right size amp based on subwoofer RMS rating and configuration. This will be a new installation for a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS. It'll be a new purchase for both the subs and amp.

Primary Question:

for example: two 12" DVC 2 ohm (per voice coil) subs rated 500w RMS, series-parallel configuration (vc's in series and subs paralleled to amp) for a 2 ohm load to the amp.

In selecting an amp, do I need to look for an amp that can deliver 500w RMS or 1000w RMS at 2 ohms? In other words with the subs in parallel to the amp, do I add each subs RMS rating?

Also, if I have the options of getting an amp slightly below or slightly above the subs RMS rating, which is the better option? I'm thinking an amp that can deliver more than the subs RMS rating would be the better option and that I'd just need to turn down the amp gain. Correct?

Secondary Question:

Using Alpine as an example ... my budget will allow for either one 12" type X or two 12" type R's. Assuming I have the space for a two sub setup, which is better? I want good quality hard hitting bass that I can feel, but am a bit worried about shaking the car to pieces or breaking glass. I won't be entering SQ or SPL competitions ... just want great sounding hard hitting bass.

This ties back into my first question ... type R has a power range of 50 to 500w RMS while the type X has a power range of 500 to 1000w RMS. Do I add the RMS for the two type R's, meaning that I'd need a 1000w RMS amp for either setup (2-R's or 1-X)?

Thanks in advance,

TJ

Looking at some options that would fit my budget ...

Subs (one of the following four options):

two - JL 12W3V2-2 ... 2 ohm total load, 600 wrms total
two - Alpine SWR-1222D ... 2 ohm total load, 1000 wrms total
two - Hifonics B12D2 ... 2 ohm total load, 1200 wrms total
one - Hifonics OLM1612 ... 1 ohm total load, 1600 wrms total

for all options I'd go with a Hifonics mono D amp rated a little over the total sub load and the total price (subs and amp) comes out in the same ballpark (within $100).

note: I want good quality bass for daily driving

Main Speakers (6.5 comp up front, 6x9 coax in rear):

JL VR 650 CSi
JL VR 690 CXi

Boston Acoustics SX60 (front and rear)

Alpine SPX-17REF
Alpine SPR-69C

Again, I'm planning on going with a Hifonics multi-channel amp rated slightly above the speakers rms rating and the total cost (amp plus speakers) comes out about the same for either option (within $100).

Any thoughts considering that I'm not looking at the top of the line models for the subs or mains (i.e. not looking at JLW6 or W7 subs)? Or is it a case of they're all good and it just depends on personal preference?

Regarding the subs, I was originally thinking the high powered Hifonics OLM 1612 would be the way to go (looks awesome and I've read reviews saying it sounds great), but I can only afford one and the it requires the most power of all the sub options I'm considering. Also, this will be for daily driving (no plans for SPL competition). I want good quality bass I can hear and feel inside the car (Mitsubishi Eclipse) and would imagine the lower powered subs would be more than sufficient. I'm also a bit concerned about running into electrical problems running higher powered amps. The car has been sitting in the driveway for three years (just now getting title issue cleared up) so I need to replace the battery anyways (will probably go with optima) but I'd rather not have to upgrade the alternator.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated ... I'm a newbie   : )

Any opinion on MB Quart Premium series subs? I had MBQ coax speakers in a Jeep Wrangler about 10 years ago and was very impressed (not sure what model). But, I understand MBQ got bought out by Rockford and then again by Maxxsonics. Not sure if these take-vers had a negative (or positive) effect on the product.

The MBQ Premiums look good (from what I can decifer of the specs), but cost a little more than the Alpine type R's. But, the Alpines have a sensitivity of 87 versus 85 for the MBQ Premiums. I'm more interested in SQ.

Also, I tech rep at OCS told me that MBQ and Hifonics amps are the same (since their made by the same company, Maxxsonics) but I find this hard to believe. They may have the same parent company, but I'd imagine there are still differences between the two product lines.

Opinions please???

Regarding main speakers, any opinion on MB Quart and Alpine?

I had MBQ coax before (about 10 years ago) and really liked them. I've heard Bostons are the best but have never heard them myself. And there seem to be a lot of people that swear by going Alpine all the way. I'm considering all three.

It's a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse ... 6.5" round front and 6x9 rear. I'll go with components up front and coax in the rear (although it looks like BA doesn't make 6x9's). It's looking like I'll be using two Alpine type R's (or something comparable) for the subs.

I LOVE My Rockford Fosgate Power 1000 25 to Life 5ch amp......  my Polk Audio mid + high components.... my Dayton 8" mid-bass drivers, and my 12" eD 13Kv.2 subs.... oh, and my Kenwood Excelon X792 HU.....

Come to think about it, theirs no equipment in my setup that I regret buying. It all works / sounds, just the way I intended it too.

Sure, theirs more stuff I want to do with my system (sound deadening, digital sound processor, relocation of my mid-bass drivers, etc) but for what I have now, my system sounds really clean and balanced, and gets pretty loud too. I couldn't be happier :-)

Personally speaking, I think the build (for most of your system) and the enclosure (for your sub(s) has more to do with the final product, than the exact brand of the equipment.

Peace,

Fish

AudioControl has been Mid line at best. They had the virtue of early innovation and marketing. More than a few have failed due to power supplies. The noise floor is horrible. If you buy the stuff knowing it's Mid level, fine. The Best? Not by a long shot...

Well, since this link was re-posted I decided to vote. Maybe there are a ton of new members like me that have not seen this poll and would like to give their .02 also.

For years I have wished to own a complete Zapco system. Heck, at the time they didn't even make speakers yet (none that I remember). I have always been impressed with how clean and powerful Zapco systems sound. Now, I can almost afford one. posted_image

Im all about oldschool power. PPI Power Class, PPI Art Series, Orion HCCA, and US Amps. I would goto the audio shops and drool over this gear when it was new, couldnt afford it at the time.

I have a PPI PC2350 and PPI PC450 in my closet. Still trying to decide if I will put a system together.

Is oldschool gear an option? LOL

I really fell in love with Soundstream in 1995 when the amps were blue and I could'nt afford them. Now I just bought their 4 x 100 watt Tarantula amp for my mids & highs and their 7 band parametric eq (it looks great under my Kenwood deck 'cause both blue lights match!) Both Soundstream products were on clearance and I got both for under  $250 and my van sounds great!!

I voted Alpine but I only use their HUs. I have old Phoenix Gold 4 channel amps & a JL Audio sub amp. The Phoenix Gold amps are 10 yrs old & still working great for front components. I have run a system with just one 475 PG amp. Plus I can have these amps rebuilt for $140 & one way shipping. My old HU choice was Eclipse units without power. I've owned 3 5000 series Eclipse cd players. The last had 8 volt outputs & sounded great. It didn't have MP3 playback but it was a 2001 model.I don't know what I'd use for amps today. Probably Elemental Design amps.

1: Read the list again... It's there.

2: "Are"? No. "USED to be". Especially for the money.

I voted Audiocontrol 'cos they looked lonely.

But seriously, I see a relentless habit of innovation with morals rooted in quality. I rarely need their products but I guess I just like to know they're out there. Still.

As for head units I like Pioneer. They have tons of features and good sound quality at a reasonable price.

As for amps and speakers, I like JL Audio.

Highs and Mids: TREO Engineering any of their lines are great, their entry level RSX line sound really good.

Under the impression that they were looking for a single company solution, but that was an ASSumption. You would think that I had learned by now.

Not a hugh car audio extremist, I just want to here my music with the windows down on the freeway.  I have a 2011 crew cab Silverado with OEM  Bose navigation that I equipped with JL Audio Clean Sweap, HD 900/5, C5 componet's in all four doors, stealth box(2 10") and dynamated all around.  I've tried several other brand and to me, JL is the most musical with all the power of any other brand.  I can turn it up  so loud you can not hear anything but the music with the sunroof and windows down, running 80 mph and the high's, mid's and bass are crystal clear. I love a fine tuned system were the big three's all stand out!  JL Audio fan, works great when keeping the OEM head.

There's one I don't see on the list. I guess they don't make HU's anymore hence the reason they are not listed. Back in the '80s I had a Sansui HU that was awesome! Back in those days they were rare but did exist. I paid a pretty penny for it at a place called Leo's Stereo (anyone remember them?) and it was worth every cent. Back then you didn't have all the fancy options you have today but instead you had quality build and awesome sound.

Pioneer all the way. Their Supertuner III series have a superb front end receiver and is superior to others. The ability to pull in distant stations and keep them 'locked' in is excellent. My current model is the DEH-X8800BHS...which has an HD tuner & 4V pre-out's. Something I wanted. My Kenwood BT710HD I have for sale is excellent, however, the receiver sensitivity isn't as good as I would like...especially living in the middle of nowhere wast of Chicago by 70 miles.
