Im in the process of installing a remote start alarm in a friends 97 grand marquis but am having a problem with the trunk solenoid. I wired up a relay between the output wire of the alarm and the trunk release wire.

its wired like this:

(-) alarm output - 85

purple / YELLOW trunk wire - 87

12 volt (+) from constant feed in ignition harness - 86, 30

everytime i try to activate it, the starter/alternator fuse blows. Should i take the 12(+) straight from the battery? I figured the ign. harness would be able to handle the draw of a stock trunk solenoid. Am i missing something here?

Is the purple / YELLOW positive going towards the trunk and if so does it sit on ground or nothing?   Does it go straight to the solenoid which is then grounded on the other side?  I would take a15amp fused permanent feed to 87 and 86 and take the output from . As it happens your relay set-up is correct, it's just everyone seems to take 30 as the output, although in your case 30 and 87 are interchangeable. One more thought place a diode across 85 and 86 with the band towards 86 (pos).

Wasn't those old Crown Vic's 5 wire for the trunk pop? I think they were. You need to cut the purple / YELLOW and put the trunk side to 30. car side to 87a, 12volts to 87. This will stop 12volts from backfeeding to the car itself...

Thanks Mike M2 that's what I was leading up to with my "sitting on ground" question,  let's face it,  I don't even know what a Grand Marquis is!   Saab 900/9000 were the only others I can think of with a 5 wire,  the question being why? It's so unecessary.

It probably has factory keyless entry. Does it have the keypad on the driver's door?

It should be like this:

85: trunk release output from alarm
86, 87: fused 12 volts
------cut car's factory trunk wire in half----
87a: "dashboard side" of trunk wire
30:   "trunk side" of trunk wire
