Hey everyone.

I am new here so please be gentle. I am contemplating whether it's worth the extra $2-300 that installers CHARGE to have someone else install an alarm, or whether my DIY skills are up for a challenge to try installing a car alarm all by myself. Although, if I choose the latter, I will be reading up on the guides, how to's and basics VERY frequently, as I do enjoy the luxury of being able to save and that way, (should I ever need to) be able to UNINSTALL the alarm myself.

I currently have a 2007 Mitsubishi Lancer (I'm from Australia). First off, I would like some peoples input on what is the best BRAND / MODEL of alarm system to go for? Here are my needs:
- Quality / reliable of course, the kind you hear "less" (or no) bad stories about
- I have a FACTORY engine immobiliser / keyless entry / central locking system already, so I just need an UPGRADE alarm
- I have no interest in getting remotes or getting a SIM card/GSM system
- I quite obviously NEED sensors/protection for windows, boot and bonnet

I have looked into RhinoCo, Viper and Mongoose when it comes to BRANDS. Specifically, the Rhino "TRANS" model, I think this is BEST suited to my car needs - problem is I cannot find where I can buy this model from in Australia NOR a price. Great going Rhino!!

Second, VIPER seems to be a favourite brand stocked by car-specialist retailers here in Oz, specifically AUTOBARN. I believe the most suited model 3901/2/3V CANBUS OEM Secutiy upgrade system. Is it the U.S site that reports it to be $229? If so, translated to AUD is outof my price range, I did see Viper models from $250+ at AUTOBARN though...

Then there is Mongoose, I have found one on ebay for $199 BIN, which is basically the same thing I've mentioned, its the MAP80, upgrade to factory standard system with sensors, considered a "5 star" of alarms in their range. A good price, but any opinions on this model, brand, or any above??

--------

Finally, if I were to self-install one of these specific models, any specific tools I MUST have for safe/secure installation, any videos or recommendations as to how to go about this given the MAKE/MODEL of my car? Anything that can help me and buying and installing this myself??

Thanks guys,

I'm not going to run this reply to any great lengths,  the short version of which is how long is a piece of string but do you have South African Conlog alarms in Oz?   The spec you require is very narrow and what you are after is known as a CAN alarm, 2 x siren wires, power,  ground (earth) and 2 to the specific CAN wires to that vehicle, it's pre-programmed to the data system on the specific vehicle.  Failing that Cobra and Toad do alarms that work off the factory remote. I'm sure the Toad product is available where you are, also Toad is manufactured in the same factory as Clifford, and Cobra in Europe supply Mits directly.  DEI tried to market CAN alarm systems over here a couple of years ago, quite cheap but I think there were lots of problems. Come and work for me for a few months and we'll see if you're capable of this work.
