I had my viper installed at bestbuy out in Cali, I have a 2001 acura cl.  For some reason my car was not properly hooked up so I brought it back.  A different guy hooked it up.  I got my car back after the place was closed and the guy was gone.  I lived some ways away so I picked my car up and drove off.  The idle immediately starts going hay wire.  I couldn't bring it back so I headed back to Post, I was military.  Fast forward and my car was shipped back to D.C. running fine but idles crazy.  It drops the idle down, picks up, down and picks up.  The car has had numerous people look at it from bestbuy.  It only idles funny sporatically so I get crazy looks.  My viper goes down all together now, I don't know why it isn't working.  I look and there is a wire leading into the engine, aftermarket.  It was hooked to one of my ignition coils, far right.....last wire on the left.  I unhooked it and wrapped it with electrical tape and traced it back to my drivers well it went to a box with 3 white plugs, tapped into one of those wires.  I cut it and tapped it.  My car was driven but it still idled funny.  I thought they weren't supposed to tap a wire in the engine bay? Could this wire be grounding out something.  No codes and everything checks out fine otherwise....pls help

The wire going into the engine bay would be for the tach signal. And yes, it is common to make this connection in the engine bay. Have you called any Honda mechanics? Your symptoms are common on Hondas. My accord used to do that every once in a while, my buddies Honda used to always do it. I had another guy show me the part to replace, but I never did do it.

Try disconnecting the battery for about an hour then reconnect it drive about 300 miles starting and stopping the engine around every 25 miles or just drive like normal and it will most likely clear itself up. when they installed the alarm they most likely diconnected the battery and the computer lost its idle routine and it takes a while to relearn. If you want to fix it quickly the dealer can run a relean routine on it they'll most likey charge 1hr labor

Some thoughts, I never connect to coils, only injectors, engine management or instrument panel (rev counter) but surely the Acccord has the blue wire with the plug in the engine bay? And why would they disconnect the battery if they were competent?  They could have powered up internally from the ign feed, fusebox feed or engine bay fuse box.

I've always tried my best to find a tach signal on the inside of the car, and on most Hondas, it's not very difficult if you look.

However, it is standard practice to run the remote starter's tachometer wire through the firewall, under the hood, and connect it to items on the engine that will make pulsing signals with the engine running........coils, fuel injectors, or even crankshaft or camshaft position sensors.

This is the wire that "tells" the remote starter that the engine has indeed started, and that it can stop cranking the starter.

As you might imagine, though, that tachometer wire (like any other wire) has to be routed carefully.

If it shorts to ground, that obvoiously would be bad news for the car.

It's possible for the wire to fall down onto something hot on the engine and melt, if it's not routed properly.....or if the wire was run through a simple hole drilled into the metal of the firewall, it could rub and short out there.

I'm not saying that the tach wire IS shorted out, or saying that the installer did anything wrong..........I'm just saying it's a possiblity that should be ruled out.

You were wise to try disconnecting it, that's a good place to begin. (Keep in mind that the remote start won't work until you reconnect it.)

I like the others' idea of disconnecting and resetting the battery. It costs nothing to try. Just make sure you have the anti-theft code for the radio.

I hear you but the tach wire should have been easy to find, because I had a z1 already hooked up.  I made a stupid mistake by bringing my car to bestbuy for an install after getting a good shop to installing the rest of my system.  I don't think the tach wire hooks directly to one of the ignition coils in the engine bay.  I'm not an installer but I don't think so.  I believe on a honda this was not supposed to be done and like others said it should have been a blue wire and found easily.  I unhooked the wire and it ran w/o the surging today, I am keeping my fingers crossed.  The alarm will be left no working and possibly taken out of the car completely, I just didn't know if leaving the z1, w/o a something atleast detering thieves.  My car has been disconnected several times already but i will try it again after disconnecting the wire.  I will wait until later this week, I am leaving all alone at the moment.
