my dad has a 97 malibu with the passlock 2 problems of not starting from time to time, i just want to know if i can get past it without installing a bypass module since he does not want the alarm or a remote start. can i do this with just a relay and resistors ? or i must use a module. i just how will the wires have to be connected .thanks for any help.

i need help with the following problems, i follow  the instructions for the passlock2 on the 97 malibu ,but i cannot get a correct reading , i cut the yellow wire in half and stripped the black wire, then i place the black lead from the multimeter with an aligator clip to the strip black wire and the red lead to the yellow wire key side and then i turn the ign. key to run and place the trans .in reverse and then crank to run and release and when i look at the meter the numbers are non stop ,i'm i doing it the correct way and also i place the meter on 20k .i'm i suppose to get the reading between the yellow wire only or why its this meter showing just random numbers. thanks for your help.

hi there, i search thru the site for an answer to my problem but could not find it, i 'm trying to hook up a relay to bypass the passlock 2 ,but cannot find the correct way to do it ,i cut the yellow wire in two and bare back the black wire and then i connected the ohm meter with the dial on 20k and conect it the red clip to the yellow key side and the black lead to the black wire ,then i turn the key to on ,shift the car to reverse and then turn the key to run and release, and when i look at the meter to read the number to match the resistor, the omh's numbers  keep changing . am i suppose to wait until it stops or am i doing something wrong or  the steps are in the wrong way. thanks for your time to read my question.

If you do it a few times ...you should get a consistent #...You can start farther down on the resistance scale...and work your way up to 20k...

Sounds like you have it right:

Lower the range on your multimeter and if this doesn't work, try another multimeter.

You need to hold the key in the crank position and get a reading. Then swap the red and black leads and do it again. you will get 2 different readings.  Take the average of the 2, and thats the R-code for your vehicle. If you are doing a permanent bypass of the passlock sytem, you also want to make sure you use relays and trigger it only during crank. If you use ignition to trip the relay the security light will stay on all the time. Hope this helps.

By the way, I have described the way to do this but in no way recommend it. Spend about $150 and get your ignition replaced. If not be 100% sure of all your connections by soldering them. if you use butt connectors and spade terminals and something comes undone he is stranded!!!

thank you for your time, i'm still a bit confuse with the procedure ,do i cut the yellow wire first b-4 i put the car on the run position and then put the car on reverse and finally crank it while having the red meter lead on the key side yellow wire and the black meter lead on the stripped only black wire, and wait for the meter to stop and then switch the red and black leads and crank it again ,and wait again for the meter to stop and then take the higher reading and match it with the relays and resistors. thanks again

i been having a very tough time gettig the proper resistance to my 97 malibu ,we purchase a new ignition switch since the old one had the passlock 2 problem, and now a year later the car its doing the same, i need to know the proper procedure to find the resistance value , i in the past try .cutting the yellow wire and strip the black and placing the meter on ohms and turn the key to run and shift the car onto reverse and the turn to run, and i keep getting just mulpitle readings non stop higger whe it try to run and then keeps going down ,but it does not stop at any number. what i''m i doing wrong and its this the proper way, some people say nothing about doodieing to reverse and some say to switch the meter leads from yellow to black, which of this steps are wrong . i try two different meters ,same result no stable resistance value. also somebody say to keep the key in the crank position while you take the readings. some say to release the key to run . sorry for the long post, i'm comfuse . i really thank  you if i can get the proper way and maybe why i cant get the numbers to stop rolling

first, where are you in the vehicle to get the yellow and black wires? you should be behind the radio, right at the ignition. second, once you've cut the yellow and stripped the black, turn the key to the on position and put the car in gear(this is so the car doesnt start when you turn the key in the next step. third attach your dmm as in the previous posts. 4th, turn the key all the way to start and hold it there until you get a steady reading. 5th reverse your dmm leads and do step 4 again. if you are not getting a steady number either your not on the correct wires, or you dont have your dmm set correctly to take the reading. if you continue to have trouble i would suggest putting everything back to factory and take it to a chevy dealer for proper troubleshooting

thank you for all the help i have one more request from you guys on this problem. i have received many advise and i want to know if you can tell me how to bypass this system using a spdt relay, i have been link to an audiovox and other website with a relay bypass, but both of those are for bypass on cars with either a remote start or alarm system. i need the correct way to do it with  a  car that has no rs or alarm system . this its 97 malibu with no rs or alarm. just bypassing the passlock 2 . thanks again. relay diagram
