Okay guy's I need your help with finding the tach for a 2006 QX56, everything I've found so far tells me it's any wire at any of the ignition coils that isn't black or wht/blue. I tested multiple wires still no luck with the alarms successfully learning it. any help would gladly be appreciated, oh yeah I'm installing a viper 5901 alarms system.
Thx

Whar are your other wire color choices?

What is the manner in which you are tapping in to one of these wires to get a pulse? What parts are used?

The other colors I see are yellow/red or blue/red, which are the ones that I could easily reach. I found the blk/wht & blu wires at the different ignition coils, or at least what I think is the coils. Which there appears to be 4 on each side of the engine. Unless I'm looking at the wrong thing, which is about the same area I've used in other alarm installs with no problems.

The way I'm tapping them at the moment is by skinning the wire so I could see the copper and then i wrap the violet/wht wire from the alarm around one of those wires.

Just to make sure I didn't have a bad alarm system, I tried using the alarm that I removed from my previous vehicle before I traded it and it doesn't read the tach either. The bad part is this alarm was on a Nissan and now I trying it on an Infiniti which is made by Nissan...very strange.....

Thx

I doubt you are mistaking the coil wires, they do after all have an output that goes directly to the spark plugs.

A t i n y little pulse is sent to them and the coil packs amplify that signal to generate the spark.

The wires you want to tap are the ones that carry the tiny pre amp'd signal. This can't be vague, it needs to be a good solid connection.

Since some of the wires will be ground, and one of the wires will be 12v steady the process of elimination may help you.

The pulsed signal wire will not read 12v and if you have a VM that can read the RMS you would see the value changing as the RPM increases.

Or you could just set the VM to AC and a really low voltage setting and see if you can see flutuating readings.

Check the Infinity forums and see if anyone has the FSM for your car with the actual schematic. (edit - you've already done that)

https://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/QX56/  look at the idx and ec PDFs.

Or find a mechanic and buy him a beer for actual wire info.

question for you Anonymous1 this is first that I can remember with a negative tach wire. Does that matter for a RS to learn it?

Thx Tedmond, just to be clear - the ORANGE / White  wire will be found both at the Coil AND the ECM Module? Same wire two ends?

The reason I ask this, is that it might be prudent to take the shortest path back through the firewall and avoid the main engine components and heat if possible.

@ OP, I wasnt aware that it was a negative tach wire as I didnt download and read the PDFs, I just knew they existed, where they were and which ones you needed based on my own experiences.

same wire colour at both locations. i would go to the ECM so it sits towards the right side and out of the way.

with thta being said, the wire is located at both locations for misfire detection. The ecm monitors the injectors and coil to see if its working in order and if the timing is right.

alarm learning?

you mean tach learning?

make sure the unit is in tach mode and not voltage or alternator sense.

I went through those steps with a bitwriter, I hooked it up and went through all the steps to verify it was in tach mode. According to the programming it should be in tach mode, but it still will not learn the tach of this vehicle. But no matter what I will not give up until it's found.

I feel with all the help and info being provided I'm bound to come across the correct wire, hopefully sooner than later.

Thx

I would like to say thx to all that give me some help with trying to find the tach for my truck, I finally got it to accept with one of the wires coming from one of the fuel injectors, it was a gray/wht wire. Finished the install and now I can move on to the next project. Thx Guys.
