Help!

I am installing an Utra Start 1272 Remote Starter in my 2011 Ford Ranger. I am at a point where i can remote start the vehicle if there is a key in the ignition, but cannot get the Fortin bypass  (Key-Override-SL2)  to program. the bypass red LED comes on constant for programming, but never changes state after key swaps and remote start activation. I have measured the ground while running signal at the remote start and it reads 12VDC and dips to about 6VDC, but never goes to zero. Verified good ground connections, and verified RX and TX connected properly. Am using "without Data-link" configuration. the only other issue i am having is that the horn does not honk when remote function calls for horn. I have connected the horn input to the wire in the bundle coming from the steering colum. It reads 12VDC and goes to 0VDC when horn is manually honked. Also honks horn if i short this wire to ground. Thanks for any assist on this one, i  am anxious as the cold weather is nearly here it the northeast.

Jar, We don't list compatibility with the '11 Ranger. This may have one the new Ford 80-bit keys. I'm not sure if the dev team has had a chance to get their hands on this vehicle yet.

Try giving our support line a call in the morning and one of our guys will be more than happy to assist you.

Check your key, is there a HA or SA stamped on it?  I am not sure if the Rangers are getting the new 80 bit keys.  If it is an 80 bit key, I don't think the Key-Override-SL2 can bypass it.  Last I heard iDatalink did not have a solution for the Ford 80 bit keys, either.

You can buy a blank 80 bit key and do a "key in the box".  They program just like the 40 bit keys.

Did you change the u1272 program option for horn honk to "Disabled"?  Menu 1, Setting 2, Option 2 for enabled.

Thanks, i'll definitely call in the am. I purchased the Fortin Kit from a local distributor that assured me it would work.... hope there is a way to update it if a fix is coming.....

Thanks for the quick response. No, I didn't change the programming. As a matter of fact, I did more than a few factory resets in an effort to fix the bypass problem. Still no horn.

Okay, i'm making progress, but not there yet.  I called the Ford dealership and asked the 40/80 bit encryption question. I guess I got lucky on this one. The Ranger I purchased has a PCM that is 40 bit, so the Fortin bypass should work. I went back to my wiring and did some tests. The Ultra unit is definitley providing the 12VDC iginition signal to the PATS system. The "ground while running signal" is still not going to zero. As a test, I entered programming of the Fortin, went through the key swaps, and at the last Fortin step of "Activate Remote Start", i shorted the "(-) while running " signal to ground. The Fortin unit led flashed a successful programming mode! Now when i try remote start with no key in the ignition, i get the Security lamp flashing rapidly. But, if I hit the remote and then ground out the "(-) while running" signal, the car starts. This tells me the Fortin unit is indeed programmed  to mimic key in ignition, and the only missing signal is the gwr. Anyone have any suggestions? I am SO close! Thanks.

jar,

I've only installed a couple of Ultra units, but what wire are you using for the GWR output from it?

I would imagine that the Fortin piece should have an extremely low current draw on its GWR input, and almost any kind of weak signal should be able to trigger it.

That being said, you never know. If you have a relay handy and know how to wire it, you could try using the Ultra's GWR output to trigger a relay, and then use the relay's output to send chassis ground to the Fortin piece, as follows:

85: GWR from remote starter
86: FUSED constant power
87: solid chassis ground
87a: no connection
30: GWR input on bypass module

If you do all that, and the relay doesn't click on and off with the remote starter, either the remote starter is defective or you're using the wrong wire.

P.S. I once installed an Ultra alarm/starter unit in a manual-transmission car, and I mistakenly connected its low-current GWR output to a high-current positive starter wire at the car's clutch switch.

I seem to recall that after my error, the GWR output remained partially functional---it made some kind of weak output but it was no longer enough to trigger a relay. Also, the siren stayed on at a low level all the time.

You might try disconnecting the Ultra's GWR output from everything, and test it directly with your multimeter for proper operation both at rest and under remote start.

If you find that the GWR output from the remote starter is faulty or damaged, and you can't swap out the unit for a new one, you might be able to use the Ignition 2 output from the starter, through a relay, to trigger the bypass module.

However, the GWR output comes on a few seconds before the ignition outputs.......the bypass module may or may not work correctly being triggered by Ignition 2, but you could at least try.

If the GWR wire is not sending an absolute 0 ground to the bypass, then you can use a relay to boost the ground:

30 - to GWR wire on bypass module
87 - to GROUND
85 - from GWR on Ultra Start CPU
86 - 12 Volt Constant fused at 10 amps
87a - Not Used

It sounds like you are running W2W.  You connected the Fortin to the U1272 using the supplied
3 Pin connector and the WHITE/ Violet GWR wire isn't outputting a solid ground when it should.
(You did say you double checked the units ground connections.)

Here is one possibility.  The U1272 is capable of going in D2D mode to the Fortin via the 4 pin Bypass module port.  While
it comes defaulted to iDatalink mode and should switch to Fortin mode if the units are powered
on connected, I would manually program Menu 4, Setting 5 to Option 1 just to be sure.

Thought i would post the final solution, and thanks to all that responded. Seems there are some defective Ultra kits out there with firmware that does NOT provide a GWR signal needed by the bypass unit. The acknowledgment of possible firmware issue came from Ultra support, and confirmation came from the dealer i purchased the kit from. A new shipment of Ultra kits and subsequent exchange of my unit fixed all issue and the remote start is fully functional. Again, thanks for all the responses.

You actually managed to talk to Ultra tech support?

Last year, I needed to call them because of confliciting information in one of their poorly-written install guides.

No phone number in the install guide, no phone number on their website....nothing! Apparently hiding from their customers.

I had to call an Ultra Start dealer I know from the internet to get my tech question answered. He should charge Ultra for doing their job for them.
