I am wanting to set up a tailgate sensor on my truck, using a small led in the dash and  a magnetic reed switch on the tailgate, using a reed switch i think i would need to use a relay,I was wanting to know what would be the best way to wire it. If not a reed switch a hood pin switch

The LED will pull 15x less current then a standard automotive relay.

Get a reed switch that has a NO contact on it and wire one side to ground and the other side to the (-) terminal on the LED. Wire the (+) terminal on the LED to ignition power and you'll have an LED that turns on when the truck is on and the tailgate is open.

My Boss asked me to do the same thing on his Sport trac.  NOT for an alarm, but because in his old age he is constantly forgetting to close the tailgate, and has lost a chainsaw, weed Wacker, fishing supplies.......  Not all at once, He has done it SEVERAL times!

I did exactly What KPierson suggested about a year ago. Works perfectly.  BTW, the Boss has lost a few items since then as well, I guess I should have used a laser pointer as an led and pointed it at his eyes, Or used an interior siren!
