Hello all,

I installed a Viper 5701-PINK in my girlfriend's 2002 Mustang 3.8L and the remote starter shuts down by itself after running for approximately 1.5 - 3 minutes. This seems to be happening only when the engine is cold. Once the motor warms up, the thing works perfectly.

After shut down, the parking lights don't flash and the remote starter does not try to re-start. It just dies. I ran shutdown diagnostics and got two LED flashes saying it's over-rev protection. The car sounds like it's reving just fine before shut down.

The tach wire is connected to the DK.BLUE/LT.GRN wire on the coil as indicated on DEI'S directwire. I tested this wire prior to connection with a DMM and the AC voltage did fluctuate when I reved the engine. The module is programmed for tach mode and it learned the tach signal right away. I set runtime for 24 minutes.

Just for ***** and giggles, I tested the bypass module by temporarily disabling it. I left the key in the ignition( off position ) and remote started the car - still shuts down after a few minutes.

This is then second brain that the vendor( eBay store ) sent me. I had the same issue with the first one plus the domelight supervision circuit was dead on the first unit.

Yesterday, I switched over to voltage mode just to see what would happen this morning. The car started fine with 0.6 crank time, but once again, shut itself down after a couple of minutes. However, this time it started up again on it on its own - that's new.   Sorry, I don't have the diagnostic code for this latest shut down - probably not till this weekend.

There's a few things I could still try like going to a fuel injector for tach signal, but since the thing is shutting down even in voltage mode, I don't know if this this will help.

Next, I'm going to test the vehicle battery voltage, but in the meantime, any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

How about putting the engine checking to the off setting and try, see what happens.

Now that you mention it, I'm not sure if I programmed it to 'voltage' or 'off' Thanks for the tip!!

BTW, just got the diagnostics after the latest shutdown from this morning. The sequence was 5-4-5-5-4-5-4-5-4-5-4-5-4. Now it's thinkng that it's being shut down by the remote...very strange. I removed the WHITE/ blue wire from the 12-pin harness so I'm sure that input isn't grounding out. I'm asssuming that code 5 is the normal shutdown of stepping on the brake and the car taking over.

I may have isolated the problem! Yesterday, I asked my girlfriend to remove the batteries from the 2-way remote and to use the 1-way. Bingo! The car did not shut down. It looks like the 2-way remote was actually sending out the shutdown signal on its own. How crazy is that????

Anyway, It's in voltage mode now. I'm going to put it back to tach mode and see what happens.

So everything's been great with engine check in voltage mode with 0.8s crank time. I tried switching to tach mode and unfortunatey, the remote start still shuts down on its own about 90 seconds after starting. I get shutdown code 2( over-rev protection ).

I'll try another tach wire( I think there's 3 possibilities on the coil with the 6 cyl. Mustang ) or, I'll go right to the injector. If that doesn't work, it goes back to voltage mode and I'll leave it at that. I'll have to adjust the crank time when winter gets here which sucks, but oh well.

I have a 5701 installed in my work van and recently started having the same issues as you are having. I was running my engine checking on Voltage.  It would wouk a few times, then start shutting off again after 25 or so seconds.  Changed engine checking to OFF and it stays running now. Guess I'll look at connecting the tach wire and see what happens.

Try running shutdown diagnostics shorlty after the self-shutdown and see what code you get. That helped me a lot.

BTW, I spoke to a local shop owner and he said that the 5701's were very problematic when they were first released. He claims that 75% of them came back. He mentioned the self shutdown was one of the issues. Another was that the remote batteries would die very quickly...about 30 days or so.

He says that the problems were fixed with the 2'nd gens but there are still lot of 1'st gens in circulation. Whenever he picks up 5701's from his vendor, he opens up each box to make sure they are 2'nd gen by checking the H2 connector. The H2 connector was re-designed for the 2'nd gen. It used to be 8-pin, now it's 18-pin. If you searh for the 5701 install manual on this site, you'll find that there are two versions and you can see the difference in the H2 connector. Unfortuanly, I received a 1'st gen before I knew this info.

It's a shame that DEI never admitted to any of this. It's also a shame that manufacturing went overseas. Back when I was installing in '94, DEI products were solid and made in the US. As soon as they outsourced, I noticed the quality gradually going downhill.

Sorry for rambling, but I hope this info can help other 5701 owners that mey be having similar issues.
