Subject: door lock/window relays?

Hi friends,

I am building a 1946 Ford street rod and I have an electrical problem.  I shaved the door handles and installed key switches on both doors.  Turning the key will connect to the down side of the power window moving the window down.  I would then reach in to open the door by the inside handle. This would give the car a great security feature as well as a great look.

Dash switches would operate the windows normally moving the windows up and down.  I saw several cars at the Street Rod Nationals with similar functions, but owners could not tell me how they operated.

Car friends have mentioned 12 volt relays as the answer but fail to know the hook-up.  Does anyone out there have an idea as to a wire hook-up for this proceedure?  Power in to dash switches to ?

Thanks, Joe

The easiest way would be to pick up a DEI 530T window module. Then all you need to do is send a ground signal to each activation wire to control the windows. That can be done through the key lock or a remote if you wanted it to.

The most important thing to know about relay are the pin functions. 87a & 30 are always connected when coil is off(de-engerized), when energized 87 & 30 connected. 85 & 86 are the positive and negitive to accepted standard (85 neg, 86 pos),but they can be swapped if need be.

Look in the relay section, door locks, add actuators.
Exactly how Lurch228 would have you wire them.
Then a simple SPDT momentary switch would parallel the relay triggers.
Having said that offroadzj's idea would give you one touch up-down albeit far more expensively than just relays.

It would also make everything easier and a lot more compact. I wired up my own window module a few years ago and I couldn't figure out any way to do it with less than 6 relays for 2 windows... It was a nightmare... lol

If wired correctly you only need 2 relays for each window.

I think that's what I had, but there was something with the switches I had that made me need 2 additional relays.

Where's lurch's last post about using one relay?
I wanted to have another look.
It seems to have vanished posted_image

Ah two relays for each window, now we've come back full circle to where I told the OP to look in the relay section.
I don't believe it can be done with an SPCO momentary switch and one relay.

This is your circuit:-1.bmp
Or since you're going to so much trouble why not add a decent alarm or R/S and control all from that with a 530t for each pair of windows as Short has already suggested.
You would still need the door switch.

And add central locking whilst you're at it. The door switch to control a timed lock/unlock relay (Spal, MES)AND the driver's window.
If you aren't worried about battery failure you could dispense with the door switch though I wouldn't.

Thanks for the help guys.  My expertise is more in the area of bodywork, painting, welding and fabrication.  I am way out of my league when dealing with electronics. So, if I show this diagram to someone at RS they would be able to help obtain parts?   Joe

Of course, standard Bosch/Tycho cube automotive relays.
I can tell you that your internal switches will be Single Pole Double Throw (SPD) a.k.a. Single Pole Change Over (SPCO) momentaries.
The key switch, available from various manufacturers, Farnell, Mouser, Digikey, etc. etc.

And here are the relays:-

Any of the first 8 except No. 6.
What do you mean by RS?

R/Shack died out in Europe about 15 years ago, but there's a major UK/Global electronic supplier called Radio Spares a.k.a RSComponents similar to Farnell etc. hence my confusion.

Thet aren't what the used to be anymore. If they don't have it in the store they can't get it. They can't order anything they don't stock.

Signs of the times, the aforementioned (British) RSComponents 3 monthly catalogue used to be 5 large books, now it's one, they are trying to turn their trade counters into online collection points, unstaffed.
I'm also lucky in that there's a UK equivalent to R/Shack in Maplin Electronics, much bigger range, I live just North of London and I've 3 stores within 15 minutes drive (except I have a gas guzzler and its $10+ per gallon).
