Just fitted my first remote start car alarm.

When i remote start it - it starts up fine but seems to keep cranking - it runs like this for about 10 seconds then cuts out.

I have heard about this tach wire thing.  On my diagram it says to wind a wire round the high tension coil 5 times.  I assume they mean one of the distributer leads.  I tried this with the lead and i also tried it with the spark plug lead - it didn't help.  I disconnected the wire completely and it still does exactly the same.

I had a look for this tach wire thing but not sure which one it is.  I see a few wires coming off the distributer cap but not sure what they are.   I have a 1991 Ford Sierra Sapphire.  Can anyone help please ?

You need to attach the tach wire to the high tension thingy that you mentioned. This will aloow the remote starter to acknowledge the Ford is running and to stop turning over the starter.

You say that you put it on a spark plug did you try the 6th spark plug on say a 6cy? (Last Spark Plug)  or else try putting it on a fuel ingector wire.  I personaly spent over 2 hours trying to find a tach wire in my car and could never find it so i just gave up :)

I only have a 4 cyl engine so only 4 sparkies.  I tried attaching it to the 4th but didn't help.  What about the 2 small wires coming from the dist cap - are they the tach wire ?

There are a number of places to pick up a tachmoter wire.
Behind the gauge panel (where your car displays engine RPM's),at the car brain (ECU -engine control unit) , off a coil or off a fuel injector wire (obviously only good if the car is fuel injected). Try to find wiring diagrams for your vechicle including this web site and then think about the easiest location. This wire connects directley to the remote starters wire for tach.

on my diagram it tells me to connect one of the supplied relays to the high coil which was done by a mate(auto electrician).

The last wire which i assume is the tach wire - it tells me to wind round the high tension coil 5 times.

I have just tried to connect it to one of the wires coming from the coil - i started my car as normal with the key and then took the key out but the engine kept going.

I had to stall the car to get it to stop - scary. What did i do wrong ?
