I found the wiring guide for adding keyless entry on a 2004 Caravan, but what I can't find is what to use for resistors. I know it is 5.3K and 2.0K, but can I use any old resistors or do I need a particular power rating? And why are the relays needed? Is there really that much current? If so, then I need a fairly large wattage resistor.

I searched the forums for "resistor" and found the answer to the wattage question.

But, assuming the keyless entry system has a negative output (maybe they don't, haven't bought one just yet), why the need for the relays? If 1/4W is a big enough resistor, then the max current is 20 mA, which should certainly be less than the max current of the unit.

Thanks.

It is for stronger Ground & safety.
OMEGA makes a Pre-wired, Dual Relay with variable Resistors all-in-one
or U could also use DATTAbus

Ok, thanks for the reply. I was thinking about letting Best Buy put in an Audiovox unit for $113 installed, but they whined about the resistors and claim it will take them 4 hours to install. They must be slower than me (and I'm damn slow) and I'm not sure I trust them. I'm pretty picky, don't want them poking holes in sundry locations for switches, LEDs etc.

I used to do installs on police cruisers (two way radio, light bars, sirens, the whole works - started with cars right from the factory and two days later they were on the steet as police cars), so I think I could probably handle the keyless entry, and I've installed two of these before but never heard of the resistor locks before.
