From what I understand, the wavelength emitted by the transmitter is directly related to the antenna wire length.  There are ways to extend the range, but usually involves modifying the transmitter which in turn shortens the battery life.  I had a Viper 300 installed by a reputable shop once and they grounded my antenna wire, in effect, causing the whole truck to act as an antenna.  Problem was, it always acted up and sometimes wouldn't arm/disarm.  I have to think it was due to the antenna being grounded.  So, no I wouldn't mess with the alarm antenna.  I try to install the antenna wire away from other wiring to avoid interference and if possible snake it up behind the "A" pillar cover and make sure to seal up any exposed wire on the antenna end so that it doesn't ground on anything.
