From reading all the posts around here, it seems like a lot of people are trying to hodge widge an auto starter into their manual.

am i the only one who thinks this is wrong, unsafe, immoral and just plain stupid?

also, forgive me for being honest, but if you have to ask how to hook up a relay for a specific purpose, maybe you shouldn't be attempting to put in an alarm starter combo into your vehicle.  god forbid something goes wrong and you turn on a bonus light or something in your car doesn't work properly, or you really screw something up and it won't even start anymore.

Chances are you are going to get it towed to a dealership.  They are going to charge you out the A$$ to fix it, and pull out your starter in the process.

Or, if you are smart, you are going to take it your local install shop to have them fix it.  Either way, you are going to pay someone the same money that  you could have paid someone QUALIFIED to put the thing in in the first place.

We are install professionals, with the proper tools, training and resources to do the job correctly the first time.

And don't forget:

Average Alarm/Starter install price: $350

Average price to replace a BCM:$1500

You do the math

Just to add on,

I am not saying that you shouldn't be putting the stuff in yourself,

but seriously, if you can't understand how a starter works, and why it does what it does, the putting it in and thinking that by some sort of magic your car will start..........

i dunno, just not a good idea in my books

thank you...i just think it's ridiculous...

so many people spend so much time answering questions to things that should NOT be asked by someone putting in a starter into their vehicle......

no wonder so many people think that starters will ruin their car.

and why is it that it's easier nowadays for someone to post a question on a forum like this, than it is to pick up the freakin install manual and read it for themselves?

My post on a simular topic

Calgarysouth....If you reads the entire post, I tried to tell this guy NOT to use this unit for a 5 speed.....if the fool wants to drive his car thru a wall, of over some kid.....so be it......HE WAS WARNED......

I see this same question asked a hundered times a week.....people are stupid....they dont listen to the PRO'S... they just want it done. Some one sells them a cool remote start and here we are with all the answers......

Sorry if I sound out of line......but guys like Mr. 98mustangdroptop5speed, shouldnt get any answeres from people like us, these are the guys that make it hard for reputable dealers like myself to earn a living....he should have been told it wouldn't  work and left it at that......posted_image

The funny thing is is that I had a professional install my alarm/remote start. He hooked everything up except for the PATS module and the clutch bypass. This is the reason I ask my questions. I didn't dare to try to install that thing myself...I knew I couldn't, so I let a professional do it for $100. Now...hopefully you aren't targetting me in the original post. I am not trying to be mean, it's just that I let the pro do what he had to do and now I am going to finish up and do the rest, which includes safety switchs under the shift boot so that it does not start in gear.

People are dumb dumb dumb, and it's not just DYI people, I have customers that want me to "bypass" the ready mode on their starters because it's inconvenient if they want to get something out of their vehicle... dumb...

not necessarily targetting you 98gt...

but, i have doubts whether a professional installer would hook up an auto start in a standard.  even if it leaves the shop not working...

and if he does, and he's doing it for a hundred bucks....is he really professional??

Hindsight is 20/20. It's a Russian roulette game with the vehicle eletrical & ignition system. Some win some loose, but it's always a learning experience. Unfortunately for us ( the professional installer's ) the people who win don't necessarily always learn anything from their installation, but the consequences that will arise from their install will haunt them one day after someone get's hurt or if they damage property because of a remote starter designed for an automatic is installed into a manual.

i agree totally......and it leaves a bitter taste in their mouth about that particular type of product.  So, they are less likely to purchase one in the future.  and like the old saying....bad news travels faster than good news.....so, it hurts us all

i am not a professional installer and i put a 791xv in my car with zero problems. oh yeah and im an electrical engineer by profession. that might have helped...installing the system was incredibly simplistic and anyone that is even just a little tech savy can handle it. rtfm is all you need to do really

HA H A a funny but scarry thing happened. I am in auto sales at a weekend sale and some jackass was showing a 04 350 Z to a customer and hit the remote start and CYAAAAAAAAA the car took off like a like mario andretti. Smashing into the toyota sienna in front of the Z there were no injuries.

So whats wrong with using a netrual saftey switch for a remote start ? Ive installed remote starts on my previous 5 speeds, civic and tibbie... No problems at all.

its ok to install if you think u can pay attention and leave it in netrual. i mean u could drive down the road and not pay attention for 5 seconds screwing with the radio and run a kid on a bike over. i have the netrual safty switch rigged to the ebrake and when anyone else uses the car for any reason, i turn the switch off and do not give the remote so it cannot ever be remote started.

Honesstlty "let the PROS do it" somehow does not work for me anymore.

Perhaps it is cause I had a reputalbe shop (back in the day) install an amp and they hooked the remote turnon to 12V constant so the next day the battery was dead.

Perhaps is cause a reputable shop channged the oil in my friends eclipse gst (and forgot to put new oil in it)...so he got a new engine.

Honestly I've installed a few alarms, actuators, amps, speakers, head units.

IF I don't know I ask.  If I don't get an answer I take my multimeter (NOT A TEST LIGHT) and test.

The PROS are just people who follow proper ways to connect wires, read diagrams (even the pros need wiring shcematics right?), install bypass module (I guess if the PROs were realy that hard core they'd build their own factory bypass module).  Not trying to knock the PROs but I'm not feeling the "don't attempt it leave it to the PROs" idea.

I would like to add that being employed at a shop or working somewhere other than your back yard garage doesn't constitute you as a "PRO". A professional installer not only has years of experience behind them, but also they have a conscience & they care about the customer, their vehicles & take responsibility of the installation ( even after it leaves the shop ) . I am standing up for the professional that has integrity in their work as well as respect for the customer and their property. I stand by my philosophy that honesty is the best policy and if I don't think something is safe to do, I won't do it and explain this to the customer.

This is what separates a "PRO" from an ametuer or weekend warrior. Having a peice of paper after you complete a course or working at a box store with $100,000 installation bays doesn't make the installer a  " PRO" by any means.

Yeah, but if they work at that box store, at least you know there's money to fix whatever they screw up. posted_image posted_image *nudge* *nudge*
