I have a 1999 Ford E 250 with a J-635 Alarm installed. I want to add a J-Start 3 remote start to the alarm.

I am not an alarm installer and did not install this alarm. Much of the instructions presume experience and knowldedge I may not aquire.

I do think I have connected the J-Start large wiring correctly. Where I am having trouble is getting the alarm to trigger the J-Start.
From the J-635 manual:
⇒ Gray Wire: Trunk release (Auxiliary channel 3) output. This wire supplies a 250 mA negative (-) output when the ‘TRUNK (3)’ button is pressed and held for 1.5 seconds. This output can be used to operate trunk release motors, remote starter units, etc. **Note** In most cases a relay must be used with this output. See diagram for relay hookup.

From the J-Start 3 manual:
Gray Wire: Auxillary negative output. Use this wire to control any extra relays needed to properly start the vehicle.

Orange Wire: Negative trigger input. Connect this wire to the output of the alarm or keyless entry unit that will be controlling the J-Str/3 unit. This wire is not needed when installing the J-Str/3-T unit. (the 3-T is an alarm and remote start in one unit..Not what I have.)

I have tried using the Gray wire (250mA negative putput) from the Alarm (J-635) connected to the Orange (Negative trigger input) wire of the Remote Start. Nothing happens.

Would using a Relay make this work? If so, how would it be wired?

If you GROUND the Orange Wire on the Remote Start......Does it Start??

If so, (usually) you wouldn't need a Relay.
If Not, are you sure the ORANGE wire is the R/S wire?

SPDT Relay:

PIN 87 = ORANGE Wire on R / S
PIN 87a = XX
PIN 30 = GROUND
PIN 85 = GRAY Wire Output from J-635
PIN 86 = Constant 12 volt ( + )

A relay shouldn't be needed. Do you have a hood pin switch connected to the blue wire? Make sure this wire doesn't have a ground on it as it will do absolutely nothing if it does. Like Mo says, a simple ground pulse to the orange should do the trick.

Sometimes it will start, other times it will start and die, ... start and die, three times then disable the alarm.

There is a motion sensor that has not been disabled. When I get the remote start to trigger from the #3 button of the remote transmitter, I will work that out.

There is no Hood Pin Switch attached to the blue wire.

I will try the relay and see if that works.

Thanks for the replys.

If it's starting sometimes it's not going to be a problem with wiring. It's probably a tach wire issue. You could try flipping switch 1 to voltage and see if it works then.
