Has anyone considered updating their car with the new
1. Keyless push button start and
2. Keyless remote entry (just by being close to the car, the car unlocks - you don't deliberately have to press unlock on your remote control)?

I want to incorporate the push button start on the dash, covering up the existing keyhole in the steering column and install some sort or RFID or other technology in the doors so that they open automatically when I am close to the car and automatically lock when I go away.

Obviously the system has to be secure such that the car will not start if someone breaks in.

My car is a 99 Lexus GS400 and it comes with a factory alarm and the key fob has a chip in it that the car recognizes and then it starts. Based on the little knowledge I have I know that as long as you have an aftermarket alarm installed with engine kill , then the start button can be disabled whenever the alarm is on and the doors are also locked at that point.

As far as the key chip, you just need to remove the chip from the key and tie wrap it around the base of the key hole. There is enough room underneath the dash panel to do this.

The chip will not allow the ignition to start unless it is right up against the ignition module. Placing a key behind the dash anywhere else is not going to do it. It's not close enough.

I don't know anything about electronics and would not even consider this remotely a DIY task for myself. I would need some local installers help with this. I live in Oakville, Ontario.

This is what I would do to retain ALL the security features of the system and on top of it this will give you all the bells and whistles you want + more........

Go buy a Compustar 2W8000FM-AS or 2W900FM-AS and a universal bypass module ( TBKIII or TBKIV ). Here's how it works, the Compustar system has a feature on there that will auto lock and unlock + arm & disarm the alarm system within 50 feet of the vehicle. THis feature can be turned on or off with the press of the button. Great feature and the remote control is also a two way communication device taht lets you know if the car is being tampered with or not through audible beeps, vibration & also visual Indiglo backlighting.

Now, the TBKIII/TBKIV is a universal module that induces the signal of the chip in the head of the key to allow the starting of the vehicle without having a key in the ignition. You can install this so that it will work with the remote start feature of the Compustar & also have it so that it will work with a push button starter system.

The idea is not new, but takes some knowledge of how the ignition system works. This way of doing what you want retains all security aspects of the OEM system and also leaves the anti-theft system of the Lexus intact. Also, this route gives you remote start feature that you would not have in the first place, a security ststem that can integrate with the OEM system & also gives you 2 way comminucation between you and the vehicle up to 5000 feet away. Wow! That was a very fast and very detailed reply! Thanks!

Now I need to find a good local installer to do this for me. Anybody in the GTA that can do this?

I just did a search on ebay and found the alarm but not the bypass module. The alarm itself is less than US$200.00.

The push button can be bought for under $100.00. Now I just need someone good at this to get it done!

No problemo dude. Try not to go on eBay to purchase stuff liket his as there is no warranty from any of these sellers regardless of what they say. Firstech will not honor any claims from anyone who sells from eBay. Your probably looking at about $ 250-400 to get this installed in the GTA seeing that it's more expensive to get stuff like this done over in TO. We would charge about $ 275 for installation of this nature.

I just posted that price on ebay because that was the quickest way to find the price.

I always try to buy stuff like this from a retailer instead for warranty issues just like you pointed out above.

I need to find a more affordable installer and then can do this mod.

I was just reading another thread where someone else had this alarm installed in his Scion tC and the nightmare he was running into.

I need to find an installer who knows how to install Compustars very well.

What questions should I ask a potential installer to figure out if they know the Compustars very well or not?
