I work for a car insurance company. Today I read a case where someone borrowed a vehicle equipped with a manual transmission and a remote starter. This person accidentally started the vehicle while it was parked, unoccupied and in first gear. The car took off into traffic, broadsided one vehicle and then went into opposing traffic and hit another vehicle head on. Are remote starters routinely and safely used with manual transmissions or is it unheard of and just plain crazy?

Obviously the remote starter was not installed right and the person had not much experience doing this First he should of had installed a Manual Transmission Remote starter that all the security output and a ready mode and if u dont do it it will not start,does it pay to CUT CONERS this could of result in serious injury,have that remote starter removed and the person his fingers should be broken.  ------------- dragon

lol we don't condone volence here. but there are starters for manaul trans. adn we don't recommend installing an auto trans starter on a manual trans car.
remote starters for manual trans have a set of proceedures to follow befre getting out of the car so that it is safe to start later.
or else they have neutral safety switch

There are manual transmission units by Ultrastart, Compustar and more that utilize the park brake wire, foot brake wire and door trigger wire to enter what's called "reservation mode". This means the remote start is inoperable unless it is put in "reservation mode". This mode is a no brainer to do, when you want to remote start the vehicle the next time you get in, you put on park brake, hit foot brake, and the unit sees these two inputs together it will chirp, and allow key to be removed with the vehicle running. Then you exit the vehicle while it's running, (obviously, if it WERE in gear it would stall or drive away) and when it sees the last door close, the engine shuts down and is ready to remote start. If the unit sees the door open anytime in between, it bumps it out of reservation mode and cannot remote start. Very well thought out, but be wary the cheap manual trans remote start. Ultras I swear by.

Not by professionals. they wouldn't be in business long if they did. That was most likely someone trying to save a buck and do a self install. They used a remote starter designed for automatic transmissions instead of doing it correctly and safely. We get them in here often asking for advice on how to install them and we advise them to buy a unit designed for manuals. That's were the advice stops. Most of us take safety seriously. Some people take our advice and others ignore it because they have this infallible attitude They claim that they would never leave the car in gear or that just won't happen to them. Well it's usually a circumstance like what you described that ends up happening and there in lies the problem. Some people would rather ignore common sense and safety to save a buck or save being inconvenienced with safety precautions. ------------- Steve G

I installed a Viper 791 myself but living in Biloxi, it is not often that we need to warm up the car before we get into it, lol. I bought that model mostly for the turbo timer, well, I did need an alarm also. One thing, if you actually use the turbo timer, it has to be in nutral. Not saying that my system is safe but that my reason.
