Subject: Winshield wiper problem

I own a 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS.

The windows wipers do not work correctly. The delay timer does not work. They only work at one speed.

In addition when I turn the wipers off, they stop wherever they were. The wipers do not go back down. I have to "time" it when I turn the wipers off.

I don't know if this could be related...but I just fixed a fast blinking directional. It was not a bulb that needed replacement. The ground on one of the tail lights had come loose.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have looked at new switch assemblies for the wipers. But I do not want to buy one unless I know that is the problem. Any way to test it?

Check all the fuses in the car. You may have a bad one.

I know where the fuses are obviously. But where would the switch be? And what is this "switch" Any possible way of describing it...

Thanks for the help so far. I appreciate it.

Checked the fuses. They are ok. The service man at the Mitsubishi Dealer said it could be the wiper motor. Any thoughts?

It is most likely the wiper motor. However some cars have a resistor pack to contol speed... As for the park.... Wipers setting down in place by themselves... it's the park relay... usually built into the motor...

Thanks for the replies. I appreciate it!

Does this usually mean I have to replace the motor? I checked the price for a new motor...its like 200 bucks. I want to make sure it is the motor before I buy the part.

I was thinking about buying one of those service guides. Could the guide provide useful information to diagnose if it is a bad motor?

Yes a Service guide would tell you some tests to run but you could easilly just look the tests up on the net and save youself sonme cash.... Usually if the motors not blowin a fuse thow theres not really to many tests....
I sugest that you call up some junkyards maybe you can get a good deal on a used motor.... However I did a search online and Ive pulled up prices for the motor and it comes up lowest price is 54.59 if you send them the core...

Thanks man! that price is awsome. That will save me a lot of money. One more question...

Is there any way of telling that the problem lies in the motor and not in the switch?

Test the switch by removing it and testing it with a dmm or a test light.... prcedures for this can be found on the net just google it... Im glad I was able to help you with the price...

I finally was able to test it.

You were right glantern83, it is the park relay built onto the motor.

I took off the top of the motor where all the electronics were. There was a metal contact that had been sheared off. It looked like it would make contact with a switch when the wipers went down to their park position.

Thanks alot man. Those damn car dealers said the job would be $500 - $600.

I am going to order the part and I will let you know how it works it.
