I installed a Viper 550 alarm/remote start on a 99 Ford Mustang. The remote starts works but the starter stays engaged. I can't seem to program the unit to shut the starter off using the tachometer wire. I think it's programmed to start on a timer b/c the car will start, the starter stays engaged, and about 30-45 seconds later the car cuts off. A few seconds after all this the car will start, the starter stays engaged, then it'll cut off. It does this a few times then stops trying to start. Any advice as to how I can get the starter to disengage?

Make sure that you grabbed both ignition wires, and test to make sure they are wired properly. If that is all good, then it could be a tach issue. find a tach wire and then enter tach learning mode. There appear to be about 10 options you have for a tach reference so you should not have a hard time finding one. if you do not want to do this, then make sure that the white tach wire is not connected to anything and then turn dipswitch #1 ON.

Do you have your starter wire and ignition wires mixed up?

I have already bypassed pats and the car starts. I need to know how or why my starter will not disengage. My starter will not shut off, and after about 30 seconds the system and car shuts off.

This is a typical problem when the remote starter doesn't see the proper tach signal or the tach learn did not register properly in the CPU of the remote starter. Relearn the system to the tach wire that you have and try it again. Let us know what wire you used for the tach hook up.

It probably isnt good to wait the full 30 seconds to see if it will start. that is a quick way to burn out your starter.

I mentioned this all earlier: Find a tach source. it should read between 1 and 6 Volts AC and increase when you press the gas. Then hook your white wire to it and follow the install manual for how to learn the tach signal.

Which white wire are you referring too? My manual shows that the Violet/white wire in the 6 pin plug is the tach wire. Hopefully some of these posts will help me out. Thanks to everyone that has helped this far. Oh yeah, I had to change my name b/c it stopped letting me post as Mytjoe for some reason!?

You didnt mentiuon that the 550 you had was a 550ESP, so yes the wire you need is Violet /White, and the tach learning is different too then.
