If you had a choice of purchasing a BMW or a Benz (specific model of either is still yet to be decided) which would you choose and what points would you use your basis for the decision making?   Reason I ask this is because I am facing this delimma! Thanks. Of course if I had the money I would buy both but I only wish I had that much $$.

Hey Mark, I have that exact dilema right now. My fiance and I are planning on buying a roadster for her in the spring and we are trying to decide between the BMW Z3 M or the Mercedes SLK Sport. We are leaning towards the Beemer right now because that car we are looking at has only 30 K on it and has more power than the Mercedes. Seeing that it's only a 2 seater, we didn't have to weigh out the cargo room that these two vehicles had ( they are both small ) and the deciding factor would have been the mileage and also the cost of insurance for us here.

Both companies are astounding for quality and resale so the end decision would have to be looks, function and insurance costs.

Hey Jeff, good to hear from you after so long. Hope you've been doing well.

About the car choice, I am almost losing sleep over it. I think you have brought up a very good point that I almost forgot, which is the insurance cost factor. I looked at several cars in both makes including mid-size models. To be honest, after looking at all these cars, I love the looks of the BMWs. The only reason I would consider the Benz is for the "status symbol" or what most people consider "ultimate" car, however I think I am developing a small bias towards the BMW. My sister wants to buy a Benz for sure and since she will be having the Benz, I think if I get the Bmw, I will be able to drive both and she can drive both too, although she only wants to drive the Benz. I asked dealers as well, and they seem to say that the Benz is more "sportier" and they both are very powerful cars. I think you and your fiance might end up getting the Z3 M, but let me know whatever you decide and how the insurance costs fare in your area. Thanks

Mark

Hmmmmm, I wish I had your problem. Well I am just gonna go from my personal experience here. I have worked on the BMW roadster, Its very nice. I havent worked on the benz though so I cant make that comparison. What I can go by is the SUV's because I have worked on both of the companies SUV's. As far as the interior design goes I have to give the nod to the BMW. Its definatly put together better, everything just fits tighter which is always nice unless you are trying to take it apart. I was actually kinda dissapointed in the Benz because, while it didnt jsut fall apart, It wasnt all that special and I have worked on new vw's where they were a tighter fit. I also prefered the layout of the beamer to the benz but that is just a personal choice. I did however drive the benz roadster about a week ago and the thing is just unreal fast. I have never driven a car with that kinda power before and It was pretty damn fun. In the end I dont think you can make a bad choice and I am sure you will be happy with whatever you get. If all else fails, impulse buy:)

Jeff,

I am looking at the M5 vs. E55 AMG. I tested both of these this past weekend at a local dealership. I must say I love both cars. The M5 seems to me slightly more of a "top performance" car while the E55 seemed to be not much less of a performance car but slightly better on the interior "skin". So far, I am falling for the M5 for its performance and just a little easier interior controls and several "small" differences. As for the GPS I think they both have it too low for viewing while driving.

If you like both cars I would make my decision on normal maintenance and operational cost.  Those cars normally use prem unleaded only so I would look at the gas mileage.  Next would be the maintenance cost.  Most of my friends drive foreign cars and the maintenance is what hits them in the pocket.  3 - 5 hundred dollar break jobs and the cost of normal check-ups.  Research the consumer reports and talk to mechanics.  If I could afford one I would pick the SLK.

Will gas prices ever come down?

M5 is what I am going to go for (unless I am forced by family 'elders' to go for the Benz)

And fuseblower, I thought about it a few times and two thoughts came to me about gas prices. If they go high, the good side is there will be less traffic congestion on streets, don't you agree? Where I live, traffic congestion can be (and is) a nightmare.

Haha sorry I read this thread after you already posted your decision, no offense to anyone on the board, but in my eyes its not even a dilema.  I love BMW, and would take one any day, but to compare an E55 to an M5 is just too easy, the E55 wins hands down IMO.  More hp, better 1/4 times, higher top end from what Ive heard, very refined interior, with options like keyless go and distronic.  Dont get me wrong, you hand me the keys to an M5 and I would crap myself, but Ive ridden in both and I thought that the E55 was superior in every aspect.  I will agree that although the numbers state otherwise, the M5 did feel sportier, the E55 felt too refined and tame, you give a car 467 hp and you better not try to limit it, that was the mistake amg made when working on the car.  Good luck with your decision, I would love to take on a dilema like that any day, whatever you choose you will love it.  Oh and I should mention that I am so biased because the E55 is my absolute top pick in a car, you hand me two million dollars and I would go buy a loaded E55 amg, and then go build a 427 ac cobra

A benz will never outhandle a bimmer... now don't get be wrong, Benz's do ride smoother down the road, but when you hit the canyon's it over with, the M5 will smoke that E class.  Ive owned both & there is a reason they call bimmer's the ultimate drving machine's- that is, if you know how to drive!  Plus that tranny in the E55 doesn't compare to the 6 speed gearbox or any gearbox that bmw builds for that matter.

markcars,

I like your theory but I wish it was true.  Out here it seems that since gas has going up there are more cars on the road.  Not to help the situation any more it seems that on every street you turn on there is some type of construction so if there is no traffic you still can't go fast (bummer).  To add to it the police out here stand outside of there cars and run radar and pyhsically stand in the highway to pull you over.

Now how's that for a Sunday run?

what's up with police stepping out in front of your car. this police officer did it to me on July 5th, good thing i had at least a few hours of sleep (seeing how it was july 4th) or else i probably wouldn't have stopped. but honestly, i can see them hiding and sniping you with their radar then sending a car after you. it takes balls to step out in the middle of the street. and where i live, you get scared even when you have to cross the stree with the walk signal.

obviously the gas price problem does not effect people, maybe except me, i started riding the bus to work, and the transit system here is scary. but you see people with SUV and driving everywhere. when i bike i can, when i walk i can. but this all coming from a college kid with no money also.

as far as the car dilemma, i have only ridden in the two, but i like the BMW better. for some reason it just seemed a little more classy to me. but they are both wickedly fun to ride in, and hopefully sometime when i'm outta school and have a job i can face your problem. good luck.

M5 Hands-down.  7-speed tranny that shifts in 65ms? There's no comparison.  Just ask Car and Driver who did the M5 vs E55 Comparison.
