Here is Tach wire info from DEI :
Tachometer White (ac) @ instrument cluster (gas or diesel) or ECM (gas)
The ECM (Engine Control Module) is located near the battery and down low between
the fender and fan under a BLACK plastic cover. On the 4.3L engine the TACH wire is
at Pin 20 in the connector marked "RED". On the 4.8L, 5.3L and 6.0L engines, it is
located at Pin10 in the RED connector.
You can also get a Tach signal at any F.I. using the non-common colored wire. Here
is a picture of this wire on a 2002 Silverado 5.3L engine :
