2001 ford mustang gt ignition harness

Hello Everyone,

I believe there is some discrepancy among which wires in the ignition harness for a 2001 Mustang GT are accessory and which are ignition.

Everything I can find says there are like three different options:

Option 1:
Ignition 1 RED / LIGHT GREEN
Ignition 2 GRAY / YELLOW
Accessory 1 GRAY / YELLOW

Option 2:
Ignition 1 RED / LIGHT GREEN
Ignition 2 GRAY / YELLOW
Accessory 1        BLACK/ LIGHT GREEN
Accessory 2        RED / BLACK

Option 3:
Ignition 1 RED / LIGHT GREEN
Ignition 2 RED / BLACK
Accessory 1        GREY / YELLOW
Accessory 2        BLACK/ LIGHT GREEN

Can someone tell me what is correct? There are also two of the GREY / YELLOW wires in the ignition harness, if one is accessory and one is ignition how do you know which is which? All I need to know is the true, for sure answer on how many accessory wires there are and how many ignition wires there are as well as the proper colors for each! Thanks a ton in advance!

Here is another possibility from ReadyRemote ( DEI ) :

12volts Yellow & Lt. GREEN/ Purple (+)     @ ignition harness
Starter WHITE/ Pink (+)      @ ignition harness    
Second Starter  N/A       
Ignition  RED / Lt. Green (+)   @ ignition harness    
Second Ignition N/A       
Third Ignition  N/A       
Accessory  Gray / YELLOW and RED / Black (+)     @ ignition Harness
Second Accessory    BLACK/ Lt. Green (+)@ ignition harness


Remember these are only guides and they can be wrong. Your Digital Multi Meter, on the other
hand, always tells the truth. Sorry, don't have any saved notes on a 2001 Mustang. It always
pays to test and then re-test before making your connections.

The easy test :
Starter wires only show +12V during cranking.
Ignition wires stay at +12V during cranking, Accessory wires don't.

from my ford info:
3 battery feeds fused at 40A each: yellow, yellow, and light GREEN/ violet.
ignition: RED / light green
starter: WHITE/ pink
power at ignition position only 1 : grey / YELLOW X 2
power at ignition position only 2 : RED / black
accessory: BLACK/ light green

so the grey / YELLOWs, RED / black and BLACK/ light green can all be wired as accessory circuits. the two grey / YELLOW are in parallel at the ignition switch to power the blower motor (splits the load between the two sets of contacts of the ignition switch).

when doing a remote start on a ford vehicle with similar ignition switch wiring, i usually add an external relay to switch power for the blower motor circuit. keeps this high current circuit isolated
from the module itself.

Ok so next question then, my remote start module has two ignition wires that can be wired in and one accessory wire. The directions say,

What am I going to connect to what? All I need to know is what to do with ignition wires and what to do with accessory wires....? Which wires go to what?

Also, what would be the point of adding in that external relay? I had this module connected into my car the way I thought it went and was all of a sudden having a dead battery if I let the car sit for 2 days or so... after removing it and the bypass module I haven't had the issue. Any suggestions on that as well?

The Bulldog Security system you are installing is a decent system but does have some
limitations.   It works well and is compatible with many vehicles but there are some vehicles
that require more ignition connections than the Bulldog unit has pre-wired. Your Mustang is
one of them.   Additionally, on most brands, the Ignition2 output is a selectable / programmable
output that can be set to IGN, ACC or Starter if needed. The Bulldogs' IGN2 output is not
selectable and can only function as a Ignition wire.

Your first job will be to check the Mustangs ignition harness wires to determine exactly what
is needed from the Bulldog unit for a proper remote start. After that you will have to obtain
some extra 30/40 Amp SPDT relays with 5 pin harness and fuse holders with 30 amp fuses to
allow for correct installation. Bulldog calls these relays part number 778.

As to wiring the extra external relays, here is a link to another remote starter system that shows
a nice diagram of how to use the R/S's ACC1 output to control relays to create multiple ACC outputs

See Page 18. There are diagrams for multiple Ignitions and Starter circuits as well.

The dead battery issue could be from many things. The R/S and bypass to place a 30mA
drain on the battery at rest but that won't cause problems with a good battery. The bypass
modules draws very little. Did you add a starter kill relay with the R/S system?

Reference the "bad cop" I can tell from your question that you were going to follow the instructions and blindly connect the R/S wire to the vehicle wire without testing and confirming.
I'll say no more.
