Subject: Reverse Wire, Backup Camera, 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe

I am installing an aftermarket stereo in my 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe, and I cannot get the backup camera to trigger when I shift into reverse. I have purchased the 3 harnesses I need to simplify the job, including the Axxess harness to retain the factory camera. I’m obviously missing a wire somewhere. Any insights are appreciated.

Are you using the AXDIS-HK1?

I am using the Axxess AXBUCH6V-HK2, which fits the one connector coming out of the vehicle’s dash. For the power and speaker harnesses, I bought Red Wolf, which are perfect. The stereo with Carplay etc work fine. I believe I have the 6volt converter connected correctly. I’m just missing something with the backup camera.

Sounds like your missing the wire that will trigger the radio to know the car is in reverse. Not familier with Red Wolf but there should be a trigger wire on the radio that needs to be connected to the reverse trigger wire in the car. Anything like that on the radio?

I have one brown wire connected to the 6v adapter. But I’m thinking there’s another reverse wire needed, perhaps from the HK2 harness?

Brown from the stereo? you need a wire from the car that goes positive when in reverse.

I have the (brown) radio reverse wire, which is connected to the blue/white wire of the 6v converter. What needs to also connect there is the VEHICLE’s reverse wire…that’s what I can’t locate. I’ve tried the multimeter…there is power to the stereo (which I already knew because the stereo works). I can’t however verify any power to the HK2 harness, either because there is none or because I can’t get the tips of the multimeter into the harness wiring. My plan was to find the wire that changes when I shift into reverse and use that one. So I am stuck.

I had an opportunity to tinker around today (the vehicle in question is my son’s and we basically function on opposite schedules, so I get these occasional chances to work on it). I found a wiring error in the power harness, and I can now get the camera to turn on (which I was previously unable to do). But it’s on continuously. So I still need the reverse trigger wire. Not sure if this helps but at least it’s a bit of progress. Thanks for any suggestions.

should be a 12 pin plug that you are getting video signal from , in there is a Red w/ black stripe wire ( at least on the vehicle side not sure what color the Axxess harness makes it). This wire should go on and off with the vehicle reverse lights

I’ve seen the black/red wire on the Hyundai wiring. Should I tap into that? I was hoping to avoid that by using the Axxess harness. Thanks for your help by the way…much appreciated.

I think you need to tap into it, brown from the stereo to the red / black should getting the screen to change when the car is in reverse. Then the Blue/white from the axxess harness (camera power) to the red accessory wire.

So I did finally get it working. It was the black/red wire from the vehicle’s wiring. As I mentioned, I had purchased an Axxess harness to retain the factory camera. So I traced which harness wire corresponded to the black/red Hyundai wire, tapped into that, joined it with the radio’s reverse wire and the 12volt-to-6volt converter wire and…it worked! Thanks for your help!
