Hello,

After successfully installing a Compustar remote starter on a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab, I now get a "check engine light". I had the dealer reset the light, but it came back on an hour later.

Does anyone have an idea what I may need to add to solve this problem? Also, when the truck is cold and I use the remote starter, I get a buzzing sound from somewhere under the truck that remains until I turn the key on. It seems to be there only when the truck is cold and only when remote starting.

Thanks so much for your generous replies!

Make sure that you wired in your ignitions # 2 and # 3 otherwise you will get a check engine light error come up. Another thing to look for is the fact that the starter wire may need to be isolated as well from the remote starter unit with a relay.

sundial, do you have any tips on the alarm installation. My friend and i are doing the compustar 2wss-as installation on a dodde ram 1500 quad cab but we we also get a check engine light. We haven't fully completed installing the alarm but we are having problems with the engine turning off when i shift from park over to reverse OR when i am in drive and press the brake to stop the engine also dies. thanks for any help.

I had a check engine light come on after I installed a starter in a 98 Dodge Neon.  It ended up being the starter-kill relay, and when I cut the relay out it solved the problem.  That might also explain the buzzing, I also had to cut out the relay from the starter to solve that one on a different vehicle.

it is most likely the RED / white you need to power up for the check engine light to stop lighting up.which compustar do you have???

After I added relays to the ignition #2 and ignition #3 circuits, the check engine light problem went away.

Normally, as an anti-theft measure, the engine will die if the brake pedal is pressed without the key being turned to the run position. Usually the remorte start circuitry eires in parallel with the ignition switch, so your engine should not die when the key is in the run position if you wired everything properly.

Hope this helps.

thanks jrilla, sundial1, delsol, i got the problem fixed. But i have a different problem. i cant get my doors to work properly. Did you have any problems?

i copied this info from this same forum about the wiring of the door trigger. ( *3 The LF door trigger is tan, and the LR door is tan/orange. These wires are in the driver kick panel. The RF door trigger is tan/red, and the RR door is tan / YELLOW. These wires are in the passenger kick panel. Use all wires and diode isolate each. See directfax document #1076 for wiring information)

But for some reason the two rear doors does not want to trigger the alarm. I may have the wrong wire or something? On the front passenger door, there is a trigger (voltage) when the door is open and it will go away after i close the door. But strangely i would wait about a minute or so and i could see some voltage creeping up and its just enough to trigger my alarm. Did you have any problems like this? Is there something i can do to make this work? thanks for any of your help!

By the way i have the new compustar that uses the spread spectrum technology with the cm-3000 AS controllers. It works great when the vehicle is sending you a message. I have my truck parked in the back end of a 4 story concrete garage and i receive pages from it inside my office on the 5 floor on the other far end of the building. Thanks pretty cool but the only problem is that you can receive but cant transmitt because of the low power on the pager versus the more power of the transmitter from the vehicles alarm transmitter.

thanks,

pelochas

go to the driver a pillar and tap the brown wire this catches all the doors and is negative.

When the Check Engine light  comes on, you need to know what trouble code is stored in the computer.

with that code you could determine if the problem comes from the remote car starter or comes from the engine itself.

To read the code out: insert the ignition key and turn on/off, on/off, on/off three times within (5 sec) and then read the number flashing of your check engine light.

I had a similar problem when installing an alarm.  The door trigger would work perfectly until about 30 secs after it was armed.  Then it would trigger the alarm.  I simply installed a relay from the negative door trigger.  It doesn't seem to have enough ground to close the 30amp relay.  Works great now.
