Hi,

I've done a lot of reading here...great job guys!  I've learned a lot already!

I have an 03 Tacoma double cab, and I'm going to set up an 8" JL sub behind the back seat (VERY tight squeeze).  Anyway, I've already spec'd out the size of the box for my JL, which will run from a Clarion amp.  For now I'm leaving the factory speakers in and will cap them off from bass frequencies to avoid distortion.  I'm basically looking for a little more loudness in the truck without any distortion from the door speakers, and a little bit of bass from the sub.

I'm curious as to how I can wire in the amp to the rear speakers...I've been told that I can use a line converter to RCA (from Sound Advice).  I saw they had a few different kinds, and there was a specific kind  they said I needed (one that had a filter) but they were out of stock.  In any  case, am I able to just wire in the high level inputs from the rear speaker leads to the amp and still be able to use the rear door speakers?  I'm not sure if that will cause a problem.

Here's some wishful thinkin...Does anyone know if the OEM stereo (6 Spk system with the CD/Tape deck) has RCA connectors?  I have not pulled it out yet, so I was not sure if anyone else can share their experience.

If your amp accepts high level inputs you should be able to do it.

Thanks for the reply.  I was just trying to make sure that using the high level inputs from the amp wont interfere with the door speaker that I splice it in with.

When you say splice it in it makes me think your gonna just combine so to speak your amp wires and the speaker wires.   What you will do is disconnect the rear speaker leads from the speakers altogether and hook them to your high level inputs on your amp. Then in turn the outputs of your amp will go to the speakers. If this is what you planned then just disregard this part of this post.  You also said your hooking up a sub. Have you checked to make sure your amp is capable of  3 channel operation? It probably is but, ya might wanna make sure.

Thanks for the reply.  What I mean is I would like to be able to use the door speakers that I'm going to splice into for the high level input to the amp (combine both and use silmutaneously).  The amp is only going to be used a a single channel for the sub, in bridged mode. Since I intend to use the door speakers, and run the high level imputs to the amp at the same time, I'm wondering if that will cause a problem.

To be on the safe side, I went out and got one of those line coverters to just convert the signal to RCA.  Would it be better to just use this?  Soory to be a pain.  I typically dont use the factory OEM stereos, so I'v never done one like this before.  I'm looking into buying a double din head unit to fit nicely in there that has a nice graphic display and must be able to play MP3's but not cost a fortune.  Hoping to get this part of it done soon, but need something to get me by with sound until then.

I dont see why it would cause any problem. If you use the converter your still going to have to run the high level input from the deck into the converter so essentially your gonna have the same thing. Im like you I dont typically keep the stock radio either. You may wanna wire in your best sounding speakers with the sub because you may want your fader control set a bit more to the sub side. If you dont care about that then use either one just thought Id throw it out there for something to think about.
