I have a device (vantec avox video jukebox) that I want to run in my car. It needs +5v at 2amps. Can anyone recommend a power supply that will do this (or a circuit I can build).

The eaisest thing to do is to buy a variable voltage cigarette lighter adaptor. You can do it the easy way and just plug it in to the power port, and adjust the dial to 5Volts. Or you can take the cigarette lighter plug apart (or in some cases you can just cut it off depending on where the circuit bord is at) a solder on to the positive and negative leads. Also a lot of the XM Radio units for cars use 5 Volts. You can probably get the adaptor at Radio shack. I've also seen them at Best Buy

Try the PowerStream PST-DC292. I've used them for all sorts of low power (2-3 amps) DC to DC applications (1.5 VDC to 9VDC adjustable with 12VDC input).

Four 1A 7805s in parallel with heat sinks!!!!

Check the data sheet and supply the recomended filtering caps and you're done!

I am Using a "LD29300V50" 3 Amp 5.0 VDC TO220 Voltage regulator ( Digi-Key P/N 497-4252-5-ND ) for one of my Car Powered Car Projects. Since you need 2-3 Amps you will need a "HEAT SINK" and should put a 2 Ohm 70 Watt Resistor ( Digi-Key iP/N TEWH70M2R00 ) in the Supply lead to the Voltage Regulator ( So the Voltage Regulator does not have to drop the Full 7 to 9 VDC. ) And Filter Caps along with a Fuse
