Hell, we have Hyster fork trucks that use CAN-bus....

Thanks for the response. I was under the impression that CAN Bus utilizes data as opposed to a 12v signal. Is this correct? I looked at an Audi A8 and there was no way to install even heated seats. Is this the way it will be from this point forward? Thanks in advance.

Can bus is a two wire communication bus that links together different systems in a machine (car in this case). Instead of running wires all over the car, they can place components in a manner where less wires are needed. They can also eliminate running the same wire to multiple controllers.

BMW was the first manufacturer to use a CAN bus in a car, and if I remember correctly the eliminated 90% of the wiring in the car. This equates to less weight, less cost, and can lead to easier trouble diagnostic (if you have the right tools).

The CAN bus shoudn't prevent you from installing any basic component, like heated seats. The vehicle still has a 12VDC power system.

I did a little research, some websites claim Mercedes had the first CAN bus vehicle, while others claim that BMW did in 1984.

In the BMW car, they used 2km less wiring, saved 50kg of weight, and cut the overall number of connectors in the car by half.

Now that I think about it, I believe they reduced the amount of wiring by 90%.

It's in Polish, but I think you can manage. On the bootom of website there is list of makes. Click on each - you can see models. Click on model - you can see "CAN-BUS" if car has one (or "analogowy" if it hasn't).
