I purchased some time ago a Nuvi 200w off ebay (used) and unit works fine, I just never recieved the mounting fixture and wire to plug into the cig outlet. No bother tho, i intended in mounting it into the car and hardwiring the unit directly. I would previously get it charged from a laptop and USB cord. On ebay i recently purchased a generic Cig cord, and as expected, the Garmin goes into "computer mode" upon it being plugged in. My question is, what does the OEM wiring unit have that this doesnt, or better yet, what can i do to hard wire this generic cord into my vehicle?

Ive been to this site and it must be an older model. My unit uses the USB plug with the standard cord. Someone on the 12v HAS to have figured this out.

The Garmin 200 does use a mini USB plug, put there are actually 3 different pin configurations. one puts the unit into "Computer Mode" as you have seen. One does nothing and the last one works perfect.

You can goto Radio Shack and look at their universal GPS adapter(sells for 24.99) to see what I mean. It comes with 3 mini USB tips. Radio Shack usually has some kind of power supply behind the counter where you can have them open up the package and try it out on your Garmin. You will get the exact results I mentioned above.

If the charger you have says it will work on a Motorola Cell phone as well, you definatly have the wrong adapter and it will go into "Computer Mode"

If you go back to "Ebay" to buy, make sure it says it will work with "Garmin" GPS's and has a Mini USB size plug as well. It may or may not say it will also work with HTC Cell phones. But do not do a Ebay search for "HTC cell phone chargers" because they are not all the same even if it looks the same....
