I attempted to install my new AVIC-N1 navigation unit today into my 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with Infinity premium sound system (premium factory system). Supposedly my jeep uses a common ground system instead of a floating ground system, so I bought this unit (https://www.sounddomain.com/sku/PERCHYAH), and proceeded to wire it up. Well, I tried every different combination of ground connections (the AVIC-N1 has two grounds and there is another ground connection coming out of the CHYAH unit). Nothing would give me any sound. The unit functioned in every other way but no sound at all, no beeps, no radio, nothing. So, I proceded to cut apart the CHYAH unit to just use the two wiring harnesses and wire them directly to the AVIC-N1's harness, and still no sound. I hook up my stock head unit and lovely radio comes out, so I know I haven't done anything to that system. According to this site about 99-04 Jeep Grand Cherokees (https://www.wjjeeps.com/audioupgrade.htm#AFTER) one of the options to add an aftermarket unit such as the AVIC-N1 is to just use an harness, which is basically what I have now after cutting up the CHYAH unit.

I'd appreciate any help anybody can offer. I'm not new to electronics, I've done a handfull of HU installs in variuos vehicles, but I'm not quite sure about this common ground system I've seen that my Jeep is supposed to have.

You should be able to interface the factory amp with no problem. You do need to tell the amp to turn on though. There is a wire on the end of the speaker plug that has to be powered by the blue wire from the N1. It tells the amp to turn on. Thats all I have ever had to do to interface the infiniti system. Hook up the old radio and find out which wire has 12 volts on it when you turn it on and off and hook up the N1 to that.

I haven't messed with the new Pioneer's yet, but I am assuming that there is a "brain". What I would do is mount the brain in the place of the factory amplifier and bypass the factory amp right there. The pioneer will probably sound better then the infinity amplifier anyways.

Sorry Auex, there is no brain. There is a hide away box but audio output does not come from there. Most all of it is built into the one unit. He will not be able to remove the infiniti amp anyway since the infiniti speakers are 1 to 2 ohms and will burn out the Pioneer in quick order. So unless he wants to replace all his speakers I would interface it. The infinity will sound very good in my opinion.

Like I said, I haven't messed with one. But I still dislike the sound of most factory systems, including infinity.

DanDan,

Thanks for the reply. I never hooked up the blue wire as I was not really thinking and reading it as powered antenna hookup. I'm sure once I hook that up everything will work. Now that I think about it, other amps I've installed I remember having to hookup the remote power on lead, just didn't think the factory system had one. Thanks for the help.

As far as replacing the factory amp, the stock system sounds ok for now. I have to let my wallet recover from the AVIC-N1 purchase. Thanks for the help and once I get a chance to hook the system up again I'll post the results.
