Hi, I have been installing an alpine media system (motorised monitor/tuner) + nav to my car. I would like to be able to use the system without having to turn the ignition on. Is this ok to do? and how (which wires go where?) If the system can be wired so the ignition is not needed to be on, when i turn the head unit off, will the navigation unit also turn off? Hope someone can advise me. I have limited knowledge on this sort of stuff. thanks james

Hi, I am trying to connect my Alpine sat nav system to my car. I have a 'Blue/White' wire labelled 'Dimmer input' and I am not sure what i connect this up to. Hope someone can help me. Thanks james

It shouldn't hurt anything to wire it to constant power,just a pain to turn it off all the time..
you wont see the drawbacks until you cant start you car the next morning!
try some sort of timed power,like stays on for X number of mins after you shut off ign..
or a 'rap' setup
(Retained Accessory Power)
stays on until you open a door..alot of cars do that now-a-days..
i guess the q is why?
as far as the nav,it should turn off with the unit..
assuming they are both AInet stuff..i am not familiar with alpine,i have done a few,but they come with instructions!(imagine that!)
i guess they may not cover stuff like one turning off with the other,but hook it up on the 'bench' and see what does what..
as far as the dimmer wire..
look for a wire that either:
a) dims with the dashlights,
or
b) lights up with the parkinglights..
one or the other or both of these are usually in the dash at the radio harness..
use a mm,a lot of cars now-a-days use electronic dimmers.they can be fragile if tested incorrectly..
ironically 'hooking up' the wire is less likely to hurt it,but testing with a light may..shouldn't but may..
good luck..the wire just dims the screen at night,so it isn't as bright..it is unlikely that it 'dims' progressively,it will just switch to dimmed,or bright depending on the voltage of the wire,and also you MAY need to 'turn on' the function of that wire in a menu somewhere..
as i said in another post,the pioneer 7500 has a light sensor,and also has the wire..it picks the basic brightness with the wire,then based on the actual light it tweaks the screen brightness,i dont think the alpine does this,but it may..i am curious..

Yes it's possible to wire in the alpine video system to play without ignition on. Use a high amp diode to a switch and wire it for constant power. This will allow you to use the system with the vehicle on or off. Need more info, let me know, I've done it many times before, including my own.
