I have a 99 Ranger that had an Alpine head unit. The sound would quit after a few minutes of playing. The head unit displays all the lights, the CD timer continues to work, but no sound. A few minutes later, all is ok (for a few more), and then it quits again.
Thinking the unit was bad, I installed my Pioneer unit.
Same thing.
I have the factory wiring diagram on CD, and after some searching, one of the two power circuits goes to the GEM module. There must be a circuit breaker built into the GEM, but there is no diagram to show the circuitry of the GEM's internals.
Anyone know which circuit it is that I need to bypass around the GEM?

I would just do this: Run 12v and ignition to the ignition column along with a couple of fuse holders. That would eliminate any power problems on the other side of that circuit.
It sounds like the power to the unit is fine, if it never shuts off. The problem seems to be something to do with the internal amplifier, it's probably going in to protection because of a grounded speaker wire or a bad speaker. to fix the problem, unplug the radio and check to see if the resistance of each speaker is correct (usually 4 ohms). If you find that you have a blown speaker, just disconnect it's wires from the radio harness. When you plug the harness back into your radio, it should work fine.
