Ok.... I am working on a project involving 3 different colors of LEDs, what i would like to do is use 1 momentary switch to cycle through the sets of colors; i know how to wire in series and parallel, what I am having difficulty with is getting this diagram to do what i want. Im adding glow to an alternate 12v source and want to be able to turn the power source on and have the first color glow, push the momentary switch at any time to cycle to the next color, push it again at any time to cycle to the last color, then finally once i push the switch again to go back to my first color. I know its possible.. and i feel its simple, unfortunately I cant grasp the damn idea! any suggestions?

I'd suggest a 4017 "one of 10" counter, but that's a chip (integrated circuit).

Nice link Sir Idiot.
They even call the first output #0 (instead of #1) which is not only consistent with digital stuff, but also makes it so much easier describing its operation, and designing a "divide by n" counter.
FYI - SAAB use the 4017 as a divide by 2 for their headlight hi-lo circuit. I thought that's a bit of an overkill, though it is probably the simplest circuit....

I forgot to mention that I did not critique the device. I just figured he would come up dry if he just searched for 4017. It may or may not do what he needs, Do not order one untill you determine if it is what you need.

Unfortunately I dont think that will work since space is limited I have to use relays. Im wiring up a total of 24 LEDs into 6 series of 4, 3 different colors. Im hoping somebody can guide me in the right direction, I still however am testing out different schematics so hopefully I'll get lucky and uncover the magical one! haha Thanks for the input. Ill keep the post updated if I discover anything..

If space is an issue, then you WILL want to use the 4017!!
You'd want a divide by 6 circuit (6 strings of 4 LEDs) which is simply a case of connecting the Reset pin to output #6, ie, the pin after you last LED string. (That assumes outputs 0-5 are your LEDs.)

If you are using a 12 volt source then use a or multiple PAC TR7 module(s) to convert the momentary signal to pulsed or extended momentary or constant output signals. The PAC TR7 module is programmable and will do exactly what you want.
