i have a 91 blazer and was wondering how/where i would wire a capacitor or if thats even what i would use, to make my domelight fade out like on some newer cars when the door is closed or the light is turned off. thanks for your replies.

A capacitor has nothing to do with it. You need some sort of electronic variable resistor. Something like that.

Also if you put a fade like this it will false the alarm system when armed right after you exit the car.

but dont most alarms have some sort of delay time for cars with this feature and so the car can settle? i have a python 1500esp. but could anyone tell me how i would go about doing it anyways? i dont see how a capacitor wouldnt work. thanks for your replies.

Your application may vary but I was told by the dealer that the dimming domelight on a 2000 focus is part of the illumination control module. Perhaps someone somewhere has a wiring diagram of this part so we can all see how to do it. Hope that helps somewhat. :) -Erik

I have also been wondering how these fading domelights work. I was just thinking about getting whatever circuitry makes it happen out of a vehicle that has it, and then install it in my 92 Toyota truck. Would that not be the easiest way to do this? Brad ------------- werd

I've been looking to do the same thing. I'm surprised there just isnt some sort of module that you can buy from Radio Shack or something. I can see why you would want to use a cap, and I'm also wondering why placing a small cap on there wouldnt work.

That site you suggested was pretty interesting some cool stuff there. I will definitely be checking it out again thanks alot pal. PS: The schematics were on point as well I think I 'll try fade away type circuit in my car as well. ------------- DNR

For those of you that don't want to bother trying to build your own circuit... https://www.serioussubaru.com/electrical/lights-up/index.htm -Erik

I saw that. It says Miata, but do you think that it matters?

I highly doubt it makes a difference as it looks like there are only three wires! If I weren't saving money for a new engine for my car, I'd probably buy one myself since I like that fading domelight. -Erik

I tried ordering one, and the total came out to nearly 50$ with shipping. They emailed me and said it was on backorder for 2 weeks, so I told them to cancel. I want to make one with parts because I'm sure it would be alot cheaper, I just dont know what parts to buy at Radio Shack or some other electronic store (Home Depot maybe?). If anyone could help out, again, Thanks.

$50 shipped? That's insane! I would think you could tell them which IC you wanted at Radio Shack and they could at least cross-reference it. I'm just lazy The transistor looks like a pretty common transistor which I would think Radio Shack would also have.

If you figure out what parts to buy over at Radio Shack (part numbers), please post them for me. I tried figuring it out, but didnt get far. Radio Shack has a limited number of transistors and what not.
