I'm going to be installing a simple sub and amp in my young cousin's 2003 BMW 3 series with a factory headunit. The amp is a Pioneer GM-d8601. It comes with a remote knob that controls the bass boost, not the gain level. There isn't a bass boost dial on the amp, just gain and LPF.
Normally when I tune an amp, I leave the bass boost on 0, and maybe turn up slightly. How do I tune this amp with the remote bass knob? My instinct is just to not connect it because he is young, and I can see him or one of his friends cranking that dial to max.
Is there a proper way to tune an amp like this so that he won't damage the sub with the remote knob? Thanks

The knob on that particular amplifier is not bass boost. It is does attenuate the level of bass. It does not turn the bass off if you turn it down. If the knob makes no difference at all, you have the gain adjustment too high. Cranking it to the max = not connected.

Ok great thanks! I might leave it connected near the amp for fine tuning if needed. But just to be clear, there isn't a process to adjust the amp with the gain level so that you wouldn't damage the system with remote knob turned up high?
Also, I was calling it a bass boost remote because that is what is states in the Pioneer manual:
BASS BOOST REMOTE (bass boost level remote control) jack. By connecting the Bass boost level remote control to the jack on the main unit, you will be able to select a bass boost level from 0 dB to 18 dB.

Never read the manual until just now. Pioneer definitely dropped the ball on this one. It should not say bass boost. It should read it will adjust from 0dB (at wide open) to (-)18dB (when fully CCW)

The idea of a remote knob that controls the bass that way for the average user, seems like a recipe for disaster. I think I will just keep it connected near the amp in the trunk just in case. Appreciate the help. Thank you
