I have a Nakamichi CD35z head unit, which has 4 speaker outputs and 2 front rca 2volt preouts. I currently have the head unit just wired to 4 sepakers, but would like to add an amp, 2 8" subs in the rear deck, and perhaps power the main speakers (in the front doors in a mazda miata (MX5) with the amp. I have a 2 ohm stable 4 channel amp, 600W max output, but have no idea how best to wire up the system.
What do i do with the speaker leads currently powering the front speakers? how do i wire the amp?

What kind of amplifier do you have first ? Most amplifiers out on the market you will do this :
- take the (+) from channel one and the (-) from channel two to bridge the amplifier. Run your subs in parallel if your amp is capable of handling a resistance of less than 2 ohms. If not run them in series.
- Run your front speakers in a 4 ohm stereo mode on the amplifier - speaker 1 to channel 3 and speaker 2 to channel 4. Change the crossover to full or HP
Some amplifier companies require different hook ups for bridging so you will have to read up on your manual for proper connections before attempting this.

Hey Darren, do as Velocity said, connect two channels of the amplifier to your front speakers and bridge the other two to your subs. Insulate the front speaker leads of your head unit and if you like you can leave the rear speakers connected as they are now. Depending on the 4 channel amplifier you have you may or may not need an additional crossover. Use your front preouts to the crossover, then high pass out to the amplifier inputs of the channels driving your front speakers and low pass out to the amplifier inputs of the channels running your subs....btw, what amplifier are you using??
