The Optima Yellow Top in the stock position may help to keep your system charging, and the cap might help a very tiny bit. I would go ahead and to what you have planned, and if you end up experiencing low voltage (dimming lights and such) then you can look into a re-wound alternator (much cheaper than whole new one).

I have had a bad experience with a yellow top optima battery. i installed a red top, and a yellow top. the red top in place of my stock battery, and the yelow top as an auxilliary battery strictly for my amps. Within 10 months, the yellow top started going dead on me. I tried over and over to fully charge it. but it wouldnt hold a charge. and by the time i acyually realized i had a bad battery, my "12month" warranty had expired! The guy at interstate battery(where i purchsed it) said that the yellow top is a deep cycle battery meant to be fully drained, then charged, then fully drained again, and so on. but i had it wired up to my alternater to keep it constantly "topped off" just like a regular automotive battery. he said this is what made it fail prematurely. so this time around, i have 2 red tops, one of which is the original one i mentioned earlier, and havent had anymore problems. Because the red top is made to replace a factory battery, it can be charged with your alternator with no problems. Works for me!

really. i read that the red top is not to be used at a starter battery and for large current draws casue that would drain it faster.now im all confused. i have an average system that im putting in. but other accersories i just want to make sure i have enough poer and that i wont have a deas battery. how are you supposed to drain and re charge a bttery like that .i dont understand ?please let me know someone?

The yellow top is meant to be a deep cycle. Meaning, it will handle repeated discgargings and rechargins without dying like a normal battery. I have seen quite a few installs with these as aux batteries charging off the alternator, and havn't heard of any problems. I think CutDog got a bad batteryposted_imagewhich really sucks. The red top is meant to be a starter battery for large draw applications (read - big a** high compression engines) that take a lot of cranking amps to turn over. I'm not sure about fit in your xterra though - I know that most of the better shops around here carry them, and if you're a good sweet-talker, they'll probably let you see if it will fit.

You shouldn't have any problems running your car with a yellow top in stock position if it fits. Let us know how it turns out!
