I had the same problem with my new Alpine HU right - for weeks I couldn't figure it out.  Checked the gains, voltage, everything.  I called Alpine, JL Audio, probably posted here. . . .

Turns out I was so drunk when I wired the deck I hooked the left-front-negative speaker lead to the remote turn on. amp enters protection after volume 11 - Page 2 - Last Post -- posted image.

I love it!!! That makes me feel better knowing I'm not the only one that does these types of things after consuming lots of alcohol.... My problem is getting tanked, then think its a good idea to start a project, get half way through it, then say "F* it... lets go drink some more," then have to come fix the mess the next day with a hangover....

I have a kenwood head unit, the remote and everything are wired correctly, because i have had my dash taken apart about 4 times checking on that stuff.

The 554 amp (I am gonna guess) is 55 watts X 4, at 4 ohms correct? Into 2 ohms, maybe 75 to 100 watts? In the case of a single 4 ohm bridged load, the amp will make around 150 to 200 watts per bridged pair. (It IS a Sony, so take those numbers with a BIG grain of salt...) .

Curses.... those damn Sony watts. (who was the author of that post giving "in depth" description of the Sony watts?)

That was one of the funniest things I have ever read!

Someone had their thinking cap on that day...lol ! As far as the amp going into protection mode, have you check for an absolute ground on the amplifier ?

You really need to try running the front channels of the amp.  There may be a problem with one of the rear channels of the amp.  If it still has a problem you need to get a Volt meter, and right before the amp is at the point of cutting out, check voltage at the power and ground terminals of the amp.

"take one probe direct to the neg battery terminal and the other probe to the potential grounding location. This will show the resistance from the battery instead of between two points. Never touch the probes as it throws the reading off. If the probes do not reach, use an extension wire to lengthen the reach. A reading of under .05 ohm is what I usually shoot for."
