We do it from time to time at our shop, but it all depends on the intern.  Kinda like hiring the right person for the job, but if you get the right youngster, you can teach them a lof the things.  We try to do it as often as we can, but it all comes down to the number of kids applying for internship, and business, etc. etc.

All in all, we have been very pleased with our internship program, and have not regretted one person who interned under us.  Except one.  He learned a lot of things from us, and after we trained him well, we didn't have a full time position open for him, so he went to one of our competitors. lol.  He's still a great guy and we have a good relationship still.  One plus is that our relationship with this person, lifted a long standing bitterness towards the company he currently works for.  So it's not all bad.

The exciting part is watching a young person take to the hobby and finally understand the concepts and work habits needed for this industry.  It also gets the name of your company to the youngin's who are starting to drive and want to customize their ride.  The friends and co-students at the school get the word around a lot faster than a yellow page ad.  Hit em' young. lol.
