Where would the vehicle speed sensor wire be located in a 2003 Golf GTi? Color and location of the VSS wire please.

I'm installing a Pioneer F900BT.

Three wire plug coming from gearbox, brown black and a third wire,  I think WHITE/ blue alternatively, if your factory radio is not CAN, ie no twisted pairs to radio power plug then that WHITE/ blue will be in the lower power plug, far end from 12v+ and ground. If radio is CAN operated then you will need a CAN conversion module. P.S. I'm assuming you have a Mk IV, if it's a MkV all bets are off it's CAN.

What does CAN mean? I haven't had a chance to look at the car since you replied, but thanks for the response. Your saying the wire may be in the radio harness (if it's not CAN)? I don't know if it's Mk IV, MkV or what that means exactly. It's not my car and I've never been into VW's so I don't know much about them, I just know that they suck more than Japanese cars to work on, lol.

You're last comment is spot on. Remove the factory head unit, if it has two plugs stacked one above the other with the upper plug speakers and the lower power you should be OK. WHITE/ blue in the lower is your VSS. If not there, the vehicle is CAN and you'd better start learning fast because the next stage is going to be above your head.

The radio harness is one piece, I guess that means it's CAN.

Wouldn't there be a VSS wire behind the cluster at least, for the speedometer? Is it white with blue stripe? Where else in the car is it?

That means it's CAN, you need a CAN conversion interface, the only other analogue alternative would be if you have a three wire connector at the gearbox. One will be brown, one black and the third will give 3vAC when vehicle starts moving. don't try the speedo it's CAN. Its also possible at the ABS unit but again I don't have the info.

I haven't done one of these myself, but... I looked up a 2003 Golf, and a 2003 GTI, and even a 2003 Jetta.  For all three cars, Directed listes:

Speed Senseblue/whiteacinstrument cluster, blue plug, pin 3

Hopefully its there

But Howie II just said I can't go to the cluster because this GTi I'm working on is CAN. I guess I have to go to that 3 wire plug on the gearbox.
