why do people say not to mix woofers

Because woofers are very prejudiced and racist. They don't like mixing with other ethnic groups and sometimes things get violent if you force them to.

Actually, it's because different woofers will have different specifications and it is very difficult to get good results unless you operate them as completely separate systems.
