Does a 2002 Toyota Highlander have an immobilizer and is a bypass module required for remote start operation? Currently the car has a Viper 300esp alarm and we would like to add a DEI 551t remote start module to it. The car is an automatic with a 2.4 motor and 2wd, if any of that makes a difference. I don't know if the owner's manual would have the information we need but we purchased the car used and don't have the owner's manual for it. Also, is there a place where I might be able to find a wiring diagram for this year/model car? Any and all help/info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Wrap the plastic part of the key with Alum Foil and try to start the car. If it dies after you start it or wont start at all. Then yes there is a transponder/immobilizer in the key
Dont try this more than 3 times. It may lock you out
You will need a bypass kit.

Thanks for the wiring tommy.

mike sawnson, I tried the foil trick and the car started and ran with the key wrapped with about 4 layers of foil.  Is this a sure fire way of determining if the car has an immobilizer?

Does any one else have info regarding immobilizers and this year/model car?  Thanks.

First, i believe only V6 modules had an Immobilizer back then. If it did, you would see a flashing light somewhere on the dash/ a pickup coil would be visible on the light around the ignition switch/ the key would be fatter than a normal key.

I was going to say what MikeM2 said but he beat me to it.
Some of the older less-equipped models had no immobilizer.
The flashing red light you are looking for would be to the left of the steering wheel, on the dashboard, in one of the three black rectangular panels that are next to each other, three in a row.
It would have a red LED with the word "SECURITY" in white letters. It would flash if the engine were off and the key removed.

Just about covered it...You can always go have a regular metal key cut...See if it starts the vehicle...Worst case a spare key to unlock doors...Plus usually only a couple bucks to cut the key...! So the foil thing really works ey...Kinda like MU metal...
