Just my 2 cents, but I learned long ago to run a ground wire of the same size as the power wire from the amp all the way to the battery, yes the battery. 99% of the time this cures all but the crappiest ghetto installs.

I have heard the same, but I can't vouch for these people's Big3 nor chassis-body or body-body connections.
(I have often queries how a cable can provide a better conductive path than body (or chassis) metal work - assuming properly interconnected panels - except perhaps in extremely corroded vehicles!).   
But if it is alternator power you want (as opposed to battery), then grounding to the alternator/engine makes more sense than to the battery -ve.
